Mrs Obama: Tired of 'angry black woman' stereotype

First lady Michelle Obama tells CBS News she's tired of people portraying her as "some kind of angry black woman." NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

First lady Michelle Obama is challenging assertions she's forcefully imposed her will on White House aides, saying she's tired of people portraying her as "some kind of angry black woman."

Mrs. Obama tells CBS News she hasn't read New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor's new book that characterizes her as a behind-the-scenes force in the Executive Mansion, whose strong views often draw her into conflict with President Barack Obama's top advisers.

"I never read these books," she told CBS's Gayle King in an interview broadcast Wednesday. "So I've just gotten in the habit of not reading other people's impressions of people."

Watch the CBS video here

In the book, Mrs. Obama is said to have occasionally bristled at some of the demands and constraints of life in the White House.

In the interview, Mrs. Obama said, "I love this job. It has been a privilege from day one."

Read the original CBS News story here

"Now there are challenges," she added. "If there's any anxiety that I feel, it's because I want to make sure that my girls (Malia and Sasha) come out of this on the other end whole."

The Kantor book portrays a White House where tensions developed between Mrs. Obama and former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and former press secretary and presidential adviser Robert Gibbs. The book, titled "The Obamas," describes Mrs. Obama as having gone through an evolution from struggle to fulfillment in her role at the White House, while labeling her an "unrecognized force" in pursuing the president's goals. Neither the president nor his wife agreed to be interviewed for the book.

"I do care deeply about my husband," Mrs. Obama said in the CBS appearance. "I am one of his biggest allies. I am one of his biggest confidants." But she sought to put aside "this notion that I sit in meetings."

"I guess it's just more interesting to imagine this conflicted situation here," she said. "That's been an image people have tried to paint of me since the day Barack announced, that I'm some kind of angry black woman."

"There will always be people who don't like me," Mrs. Obama added, and said she could live with that.

Mrs. Obama said that she's "just trying to be me, and I just hope that over time, that people get to know me."

Asked specifically about an assertion of dissension between herself and Emanuel, now the mayor of Chicago, the first lady said she has "never had a cross word" with him. The same, she said, applies to Gibbs, whom she described as "a good friend, and remains so."

"I'm sure we could go day to day and find things people wished they didn't say to each other," Mrs., Obama said. "And that's why I don't read these books. ... It's a game, in so many ways, that doesn't fit. Who can write about what I feel? What third person can tell me what I feel?"

Mrs. Obama said that when questions or conflicts arise involving her and the White House staff, her East Wing staff resolves the issue with her husband's staff in the West Wing.

"If there's communication that needs to happen, it's between staffs," she said. "I don't have conversations with my husband's staff."

If she doesn't like being called an "Angry Black Woman", then she should do something positive to stop earning the name-sake. Particularly, stop stereotyping white people, as she did in her College Thesis, which promptly got jerked from the internet when she became First Lady.

Three Chief of Staffs in three years. Comments like; "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of my country." Kinda lends itself to, I don't know, being an angry black woman?

Of course she has no problem being the third person writing her thesis....Well and married to a man who considers half the country the Enemy and Terrorists because they don't agree with him politically... Or sitting in the Reverend Wrights church listening to ugly sermons that have not much to do with God or Country.

Hey, if she wants to end the stereotype, she should fire everyone that works for the city of Newark.

Trying to get a permit as simple as a sidewalk opening takes 3-6 months (literally) and they act like they're doing you a favor getting off their fat @sses and stamping something.

Trying to get a permit as simple as a sidewalk opening takes 3-6 months

Sounds like a city level problem to me. Why should the federal government get involved? I don't really think my tax dollars should go to making it easier for a city in a state I don't reside in to have a sidewalk opening.

Focus your hate towards the real issue. Your city and state officials.

As all liberals/progressives know, if something is written by a "New York Times" writer, it has to be TRUE. Now I believe the paper is heavily biased (left) in their opinions and slanted (left) in how they construct an article, but they do research properly and do confirm sources/facts.

For this to come from a NYT writer, you have to give it some credence. If you want to know about an "angry black woman," read her princeton senior thesis, it's -- shall we say -- enlightening...

DEVELOPING EMPATHY: WALK A MILE IN SOMEONE’S SHOES

The earliest traces of the enlightening part of the proverb date back to the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans, who said “Don’t judge a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes”. Nelle Harper Lee, an American authoress, was seemingly inspired by the saying of the Amerindians in her book “To Kill a Mockingbird” wrote

“You never really know a man until you understand things from his point of view, until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”

Lee, Harper. To Kill a Mockingbird. J.B. Lippincott & Co., 1960

People who hate Obama and Michelle here seem to have decided to hate them first, then find every reason in the book that justifies only their position.

I say it because nobody who hates Obama is actually citing any worthwhile reasons for hating him.

None. I can think of plenty, but I see none of the posters who post against him thinking with anything other than their hormones.

Not that the super extreme left is doing anything different. You can see that from the posts above too. They could state reasons that make sense to like him, but why bother when your estrogene can do all the heavy lifting.

And we wonder why we hate politicians. Maybe because nobody elects anyone with their brain, anymore.

It's not a particularity of black americans. Here in Europe, african women tend to have that repulsive attitude too.

From reports I hear from CIA and other agencies, the Angry Black Woman lable is very applicable. Her writings in this article seem to support the nomenclature. I guess if she doesn't want to be labled Angry Black Woman, she shouldn't present herself in this way.

Might explain why I vote Democratic. Because GOP'ers have long treated anyone not White AND Christian as less than human. Hence the attacks on SS (Old People) and the attacks on Welfare (Poor People). Not all of us grew up to become greedy, backstabbing and self serving. Some of us are quite content at living poor and happy, than greedy and living in fear that I might not make that next million.

Democrats at least pretend to care about ALL people. GOP's care only about their kind of people. With their high moral standards that THEY themselves can't even follow (Hypocrites).

I refuse to justify doling out taxpayer dollars to people who are simply lazy and/or feel entitled to be supported by others in perpetuity for the remainder of their lives and make zero effort to get a job, finish high school or go to college.

I believe slavery in any form, of any era, is despicable, including that which goes on today - and there is plenty of it. However, many people seem to forget some things:

In the words of George Carlin - I've never owned a slave and you've never been one - and vice versa. And:

A huge percentage of Africans were sold into slavery by their own people (there are History Channel programs that address this amd the topic of slavery throughout history in general). And:

People of all races have, at some point or another, been kept as slaves. It pains me to think that slavery still exists today, but it does - in many places and in many forms.

There are plenty of other modern day injustices to be concerned about; I just don't think we need to keep dragging this one around.

And as for the book, the "authors" who write this kind of trivial dribble need to be ignored. They are not trying to educate; they are trying to get attention, raise a ruckus and better their "careers." What a load of hooey...

Hey Redman41 How about this

How about this, my descendents (who never owned slaves) fought and died in a war to deliver them from slavery. Or how about this, the people who did enslave them delivered them from people of other tribes in their "native" land who had either bought them from leaders of their own tribe who were getting rich, OR had raided their village and killed everyone who they could not sell as a slave. The slave traders brought them across the sea and in the course of 150 years my forefathers and I set them free, gave the majority of them food, shelter and clothing. Educated so that today they can enjoy pulling up beside me in a Cadillac Escalade and call each other "f*@k$n nigga" . Of course maybe they would prefer dodging the bullets and machetes or starvation or aids that is ravaging their "native" land. How's THAT for political incorrectness?

Sonya....before making such a statement you might just Google....Michelle Obama Thesis...

txmon32, I did do that and I saw a thesis that looked objective, studied the relationships and "comfort" both before study and after study at Princeton, of blacks and whites, with respect to any changes in attitudes about each group. It had plenty of charts, and told what the results were, based on questions asked to each. the basic hypothesis was, as blacks (or whites) congregate and interact with the other group in a University setting, each would feel more "comfortable" with the other group.

In short, it looked fine to me. It didn't appear slanted, or biased and just looked like a typical study of an undergrad. It certainly didn't look like something from a "angry black woman".

Please, can we just stop judging people on superficial means? She said she was proud of America for the first time, I thought, for political (and partly social) reasons. It was because we had just elected the first black president. It wasn't because it was the first time she had ever been proud in her life for any reason. We take people too literally based on our own biases.

Try to be more pragmatic, and get a life.....

None of you turds have enough real facts in front of you to draw any true conclusions WITHOUT stereotyping... in either direction. If she sometimes gets mad, she's human. If she gets adamant about something, she's passionate. If she doesn't agree with some of the staff, neither do I... she's human. She's a smart aggressive and passionate woman that wants to make a difference...

Stupid, racist people posting negative crap here. If Mrs. Obama was white we wouldn't EVEN be having this conversation. It simply would not be happening. I don't recall this level of insanity when one "First" Lady said this:

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway so this (she chuckled) -- this is working very well for them."
-- Barbara Bush, while visiting hurricane evacuees at the Houston Astrodome.

We can only wish that Babs can experience this particular sense of loss and displacement first hand. It would be justice for such a cold and hateful statement uttered by someone who claimed to give a sh1t about the people of the United States. But she was WHITE and had come from a life of privilege and therefore, only the liberal news ever reported that she said it. It was quickly forgotten.

For the record, I'm a white dude. I'm even born and raised in the Southeast and I'm not a liberal. I was republican until the last Bush was in office when I became an Inde.

Sounds like she better get down to Rageaholics with George Costanza.

I'm so tired of hearing about how blacks are mistreated in this country. The United States has done, and is still doing, more for Blacks than any other country in the world. Affirmative action, welfare, grants and scholarships abound. Try to find that in Africa or even Europe! The slavery thing... quit pinning that one on white people. Some of the african tribes were the worst offenders. Thye were selling members rom different tribes for years. Slavery isn't just a black thing. Native Indians did the same things for centuries. Slavery is over... get over it. It doesn't affect you. Quit listening to the Poverty pimps like Jessie Jackson and make something of your life. Tons of Asians ans Mexicans have immigrated here and made something of their lifes. You don't see huge populations of Asians living in Government housing projects. Yes, there will still be some racism... but that is true for EVERY race and EVERY continent. Quit being a victim and get on with life.

Both of u hate the ideal of blacks being in the white house

You paint the world with a broad brush. There are people in both parties that may feel the way you think, not just in the GOP! My personal disapproval for President Obama is solely based on his policies and belief in big government, expended entitlements, spending recklessly... It has nothing to do with the color of the Presidents skin. Mr Obama is uniquely representative of the melting pot we call the United States Of America. Most of us are of mixed decent. Are ancestors came form all over. in days past We had many ethnic gettos not based on color but on nationality or religious belief. In fact He is the one who makes a point of reminding us he is a black Man on a regular basis. If he trully wanted to represent all people he would empathise that he is of mixed race.

Quote......I believe slavery in any form, of any era, is despicable, including that which goes on today - and there is plenty of it. However, many people seem to forget some things: In the words of George Carlin - I've never owned a slave and you've never been one - and vice versa. And:.....EndQuote

You sound like the sort that might say you have never beaten your wife but can understand those who do......We all know (but for feeble PC) what you wish (to say).

In the words of the (African-American) person George Carlin was speaking to: "Yes, but my grand parents were slaves....and they may have been enslaved by yours (grand parents). Would you have me believe (all) the effects of that experience died with our grand parents?"

I don't think anyone accused her of being an 'angry black woman'. Michelle played the race card to get folks to feel sorry for her because her husband will be running for re-election soon and this would be embarasing for him to deal with at this time. Just another attempt to race-bait the American people and another chance to divide the country.

I am so sick and tired about hearing the slavery issue from blacks. Get over it, that was 200 yrs ago and you cant use that issue forever to cover up your hate and your inablility to contribute to society. I would be ashamed to belong to a class of people that turn out rap stars that sing about killing cops that obama invites to the White House. Your inability to speak the English language is also a disgrace, and the mumble jumble mutha fugga this and mutha fugga that is beyond disgusting. You can call it Ebonics, but I call it thuggery. If you want to glorify the gansta and thug lifestyle, i want to suggest you leave the country and go back to Africa, but i dont think they will want you either. Yes there are many good Blacks, but for the most part, they are getting the blame for what you thugs are doing to yourselves and this country.... shameful.

Yeah and at the 9/11 memorial last year during the folding of the American flag in honor of those who have died she made the comment to President Obama with obvious disdain "All this for a flag?" It was rude, disrespectful, and unacceptable of the First Lady to make a comment with obvious annoyance and disrespect for the nation that gave her the cushy life her and her family will enjoy for many years to come. Upon receipt of that comment President Obama just nodded in disregard. I do like Obama to an extent, but he needs to teach her how to respect the country that she lives in and the people that reside in it, as well as the people who have died for it. I have no use for Mrs. Obama. She may be a good mom, she may be a good wife, she may be trying to do good things, but it is obvious that she hates the nation that gave her the opportunities she and her husband needed to become who they are today and strongly dislikes many of our nations citizens.

For arguments sake, if they are not Christian, I guess hateful posts, speech and hate-filled actions are supposed to win them over to Christ??!!. Such Hypocrites!

In following the teachings and example of Christ's LOVE, pray for God's wisdom for ALL of our leaders to do what is best for our Country working together for our common good. Bottomline, it is out of the hands of any one man. God is in control.

The thing about perceptions is that you don't always get to choose how others perceive you. If Mrs Obama (or any person, for that matter) doesn't like the way she/he is perceived, the first thing they should do is look in the mirror and honestly assess why perceptions are the way they are (rather than lashing out at those who are "mis-perceiving" you).

There are certain undeniable facts that have an impact on our perceptions of the first lady. She has many more employees tending to her than any other first lady before her. She has a penchant for liking things that are high in style. She likes to travel to exotic places. Those are facts, and they DO color peoples' perceptions of her whether she wants to admit it or not. Many Americans view the Obamas as self-appointed aristocrats and harbor feelings of resentment because of it.

I don't hate the Obamas' I don't like the President because he broke his promise to the American people.

Take the health care bill the first and only real cost saving factor was the public option. Which Obamas man Max Bacus drop the PO in the first session of negotiations. It was the only cost savings in the bill. It would have forced the insurance industry to compete with the PO, they would have been forced to lower the cost of their plans. And that's only the first reason I don't like him, there are more.

For the record, Ian, I am a white woman and was bullied and beat up in school for being smart, blonde-haired and blue-eyed in a so-called "inner-city" school. I was also abused by my father and ex-husbands (yes, I did finally learn). So, no, I don't really understand that. I really don't understand most of the terrible things human beings do to each other and animals and etc. But I'm glad you got my point.... One of my aunts was doing the family tree a few years ago, and when I found out one of my great-great-grandMOTHERS was a member of the KKK, I was horrified. But I had to realize that that fact has nothing to do with me today. I am not a member of the KKK and do not support their doctrine and methods. So, please, do not take it out on me that my G2-grandmother, someone I never even knew, was KKK. For us to have harmony, the door must swing both ways.

It is time for people to own up to their selves. There have been many comments concerning "angry black woman." Is it racist? I don't think so. It is, in this case, anaccurate description of a side of our First Lady. The bottom line is, this is not want our First Lady to be remembered for. It is even more tragic that the First Lady would hide behind "faux racist, I'm being stereotyped" rhetoric rather than owning up to her behavior. If she thinks the tag is untrue, than show us the side of yourself you really believe yourself to be. It would be better for her and for the United States.

A lot of angry and personal and degrading attacks on the First Lady from angry hypocrites with little or nothing to back up their vitriole.

If she doesn't like being called an "Angry Black Woman", then she should ... stop stereotyping white people, as she did in her College Thesis

I've read her thesis, and from your comments, it doesn't seem as though you have. Her thesis doesn't "steroetype white people". It's not even about "white people"; it's about 'black' people. And her thesis is not "angry" in the least (conflicted maybe – but only about how a 'black' post-grad should interact with the world – and definitely not angry).

But what I REALLY don't understand is your condescending demand that the First Lady 'stop writing her thesis'. She stopped writing it decades ago.

PacemParbellum....I'm not really angry although I am a bit disgusted about the license the First Lady takes in her position. Personally, from the accounts of the book....I'm not surprised that the wife of the President is passionate about her husband, I think this is a theme among first ladies in the White House and should be. I am not surprised that she has a point of view about members of his administration, again should be a theme in the White House among First Ladies. I am not surprised that she could have calendar conflicts with what someone at the opposite end of the house sets up for her and she is unable to fulfill those obligations. I am not surprised that she has been vocal about issues that affect her husband and his job future...again not a big surprise and she is probably not the first First Lady to feel that way or vocalize....I am disgusted that she went on a talk show and diminished her position to a lame stereo type. In doing that she diminished her position and that of many strong African American women in this country and in business.

She needs to learn how to communicate to promote healthy perceptions and motivate young women in this country. She needs to stop promoting racial divides and realize that all young women in this country have equal value. All in this country should reach their individual potential instead of looking inward to race.

Personally I do not see my posts as sad at all. I also have no grand illusions that I could possibly take down the first lady, she out weighs me by quite a bit and is probably a good 7 to 8 inches taller, I think we would be in two different weight classes.

That said, I don't hate Michelle Obama nor is my criticism inane just because it does not fit into your liberal definition. The First Lady, like her predecessors, lives in a fishbowl and should be very careful how she defines herself and her position. So her remarks were careless...she took the low road with the "angry black woman" remark choosing to be painted as some sort of victim....she made it through a rather bitter election and three years of living the life of a rich and famous...it is disingenuous and calculating to cry victim and incorporate a stereotype.

There are some pretty reasonable things that she could have said like ....

"I haven't read the book and probably won't read the book and....

...if I come off as abrasive then it may just be that my passion for my husband and his success come first and some may misread that passion.

or

I am dedicated to the job that my Husband is doing and from time to time I have an opinion and I am confident enough to let that opinion be known. It is not my intent to ruffle feather rather, to participate in the campaign on Barack's behalf.

or

and rather than talking about some outsider manuscript I would rather use my time to highlight some important causes that I have been working on...

Do you get the point...before she is perceived as a deserving First Lady of the United States she needs to start behaving as if she deserves it and is presenting herself as a dignified and intelligent representative of the American people...all of the American People.

Correction to previous posts: (legal) slavery ended IN AMERICA 150 years ago. It ended in Britain and Europe when England outlawed the trade about 200 years ago.

Slavery is still alive and well in Africa, where it started. (Do you believe that "Roots" trailer, with the white guys on horses in the jungle, throwing a net over Kunte Kinte? No such thing happened in general practice. Why go to the hinterland to capture slaves when you can simply pull your boat up to the shore and buy the excess from the local chief? The main source of these slaves: booty of war and cross-tribal raids, convicted criminals, and stubborn children.)

Slavery is also still quite prominent in most Middle Eastern countries to this day. (If you go to just about any upper-middle-class house in Lebanon, for example, you will find a black girl locked in the kitchen, and her passport in a desk drawer in the bedroom.)

99.99% of the living population is descendent from slaves -- called "serfs" in Europe and Russia. So modern day blacks have no reason to pull the "400 years of slavery" argument.

Keeping the hate alive is the main function of any "African American Studies" program, and is the chief objective of people like Professor Gates of Harvard, along with Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Rev. Jesse Wright. (From my view, their individual reasons tend to be based on keeping themselves relevant and employed.)

To their credit, the Obamas are making some progress toward getting American blacks to stop whining and get back to work. (Of course, Mr. O's coddling of Professor Gates, and Mrs. O's "proud of America" comment represent big steps in the wrong direction.)

Mrs. Obama has done nothing for which she should be ashamed. She said what she felt. She did not say that she did not love her country or would not support it, she said for the first time in her adult life she was proud of it. Do you think that her country has always been proud of her since she has been an adult?

Come on folks. There is a stark reality that a lot of myopc people on race fail to realize. Black folks, by and larg, have experienced this country quite differently than most white folks. We know what it means to be negatively perceived simply on the basis of skin color. So, before you condemn Mrs.Obama for her statement, make sure that you understand where whence it comes.

My father could tell countless stories about racism in america and during his time in a segregated US Army. Never said he hated his country, but facts are facts. He was treated differently. For some to act as if we all started at the same point in this country is insulting and demeaning. For 80% of the time that blacks have existed in this country it has been legal to discriminate against them in one way or another.

Does that make the country absolutely great for blacks? Only if you are psychotic enough to discount your own pain. My dad loved his country, but he hated how it treated him. Those are the feelings of a logical, rational and feeling man. This suggestion by some that blacks should simply get over it is consistent with the treatment and expectation of blacks when they were brought over as slaves. No feelings or emotions, just do the master's bidding.

The dream of this nation is indeed a great one. The reality of that dream would even be greater.

I'm honestly shocked by the huge amount of racist comments on this forum. Racism is becoming increasingly tolerated in this country, as evidenced by the "birthers" (John McCain was born in Panama, nobody gave a @!$%#).

For the benefit of all and to the dismay of some, Michelle Obama's thesis has not vanished from the internet. I found it quite easily and is freely available. If the moderator doesn't object, here is a link to the document in question.

Mr. Anon, you couldn't be more wrong. McCain's citizenship was not only questioned, it was brought up before Congress. A lawsuit was even attempted in Federal court (see Hollander vs. McCain). The court refused to hear it and Congress passed a non-binding resolution declaring McCain a natural born citizen and eligible to run for President. I would say a lot of people gave a @!$%# and gives "Birthers legal precedent for challenging Obama.

Dan, did the issue of McCain's birth receive prominent media attention? Did democratic candidates for presidency ever openly question his birthright citizenship? Was McCain ever forced to reveal his birth certificate?

McCain claims to be born in a military base in Panama. Obama's birthplace, Hawaii, is incontestably part of the United States. Besides, what proof do we have that McCain was born in that military base? Where's his birth certificate?

Perhaps Mrs. Obama has no one to blame but herself for the image that she has. I still remember her words when Obama was elected, "For the first time in my life, I'm proud of my country,"

If that doesn't paint the picture of an angry black woman, I don't know what does.

Hey, Michelle...where do you think that I learned the following phrase from:

"Girlllll...you had better watch yourself...now I'm here to tell you what for!"

Hands on hips and furrowed brows - a continuous leaning forward thing going on...you know what I'm talking about, here.

Please...

What I'm not the slightest impressed with is others stealing my lifelong identity of appearing to handle things with etiquette as if they have throughout their lives and robbing New England culture as if it were their own.

Some might not be privvy to this president and his wife literally stalking the common places to my family's life.

Not only is that over the top - it's very creepy.

Part of the reason why I will likely not vote for president for the first time in my life. Washington is proving itself to be rather annoying all around as it intrudes into the personal lives of the civilian more and more each day and no one stops them. I'm starting to think that it's time for an international reproval of some sort through the ICC. Our nation's capitol is out of control so far as power is concerned. Certainly out of scope to its limited authority handed to each member of the House, the Senate, the Oval office, and the United States Supreme Court by the Constitution of the United States - and yet still failing women, generally, along the societal way in 2012.

You may quote me on that.

I also understand about the "angry black woman" comment. Take for instance if a woman regardless of color gets angry about something voices her opinion and doesn't back down to any one people call her a b****. So if a black woman does it, it just adds to the stereotype a lot of people have about black women being angry people.

I am not saying everyone thinks this way but when you are a black woman trust and believe this opinion doesn't come out of thin air. Many of us have experienced it so our feelings are very valid.

Really. Only one time in her whole adult life she was proud of her country? she wasn't proud when President Reagan gave his speech at the Brandenburg gate in Germany?;

We welcome change and openness; for we believe that freedom and security go together, that the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace. There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!

She wasn't proud of the fact that by our steadfastness we helped free millions of people in Eastern Europe from the iron bonds of a Communist totalitarian regime? If she wasn't proud then it reveals more of her character and political beliefs than I had originally thought.

If she had half the sense so many say she has her phrase would have been, ''This is one time in my life that I am proud of my country''. Which leaves open the fact that there has been other times she has been proud also. An educated women who is supposed to represent her country should very well know how you phrase your thoughts can mean the difference between a friendly word or an insult, so I'd say she said exactly what she meant to say!

What she said reflects that she has never in her life been proud of her country. I wonder why some people are not understanding the difference. That one time was the first time and only time in her life we've done anything the angry b#!#!# has agreed with to have pride in her country! You know the boats leave all day long if you have more pride in your African heritage than you do in America. How sad for her to have gone through life having never liked anything her country has done, thats a bitter life. Wonder what she thinks of it now? I'm not to sure we have done anything lately for her to be so proud of if race or religion is how she gauges her pride in America.

Im so tired of hearing blacks complainig about slavery. Blacks in North Africa were selling each other long before America came to be. If you educate yourself you'll come to know there is an extensive history of white slavery in this country and abroad. White slavery still exists today. Have you ever heard of "indentured servants"? Just another word for slave. There is quite a history of white children being kidnapped ffrom Brittian and brought to America as white slaves. Many of these children die at sea. When they docked the ones that wer'nt sold were taken further inland for sell. If they did'nt sell quickly they would be killed as they were too expensive to keep for long. Read up on history people. No reasom to sit around feeling sorry for the past history of black slavery, its' happened to all races. Look up Irish history about being enslaved. None of it is pretty. Not for any race. This country has got to stop with this unecessary guilt for a past that NO ONE guilty of it is even still alive. Anybody who is dissatisfied with life in America is free to try and immigrate somewhere else. However, good luck on that.
Start with Mexico and learn about their immigration laws. Much tougher to get in that country legally than the US is. If black women behave angrily and get called on it its' quite bs to say the person stating the truth is a bigot or racist. JUST GET OVER IT!!!!!!

If her shoe fits, I guess she should wear it! If she were white, it'd be an "angry white woman". But let's keep it simple. She's an angry person, who thinks the rest of us should shut up and let her hubby run the country into the ground for our own good, feed our kids as SHE demands, and shut the @!$%# up and move to the back of the bus as her hubby told those of us who disagree to do. Weeelllll, as MLK said, Judge a man by the content of his character, not by the color of his skin. Well, her character hasn't impressed ME very much. Nor, to be honest, has much of her husband's actions. I support his endind of DADT. I loved his orders to allow same-sex partners family status in visiting their spouse in the hospital. Not much else has been correct, though. MY choice for persident (Condi Rice) didn't get the nod. Milktoast McCain didn't get it. To all those who agree with the First Lady that the election was the first time you were proud of this country, I pity you. I f you never felt pride watching a space shuttle perform missions in outer space or the Mars Rovers, if you've never felt pride when this country sends millions in aid to countries, including Iran during natural disasters, if you've never felt pride when citizens sacrifice their own lives in times of crisis to save others, virtually millions of other reasons as well, then you are truely dead inside. If the only thing that can move you is your chosen candidate being voted into office, you have lived a very pathetic and shallow life and you have my complete sympathy. At least you can die happy now, knowing that you have been able to be proud once in your life. Robin,

I'm not sure where you got the impression that you'll never know what her thesis was about. You can find links to all the parts here at: www.politico.com/news/stories/0208/8642.html

The thesis merely shows a young black woman grappling with a society in which she, a graduate of Princeton may not be allowed the same benefits of a white graduate. Seems like a reasonable thesis to me. I encourage you to read it and think critically about the issues she was dealing with in the 1980's.

What....was your initial statement written in code? haven't a clue what you are talking about. Michelle Obama is a lawyer and no doubt extraordinarily bright...the angry black woman stereotype is old and worn out and amusingly stereotypical of whomever wrote the book... seems few people know how to guage who black women are...so they lump them into some irrational silly stereotype...What I love about Michelle is that she smart enough to take on anyone in a discussion on any subject, she is a formidable role model in being willing to run, dance and play with children in a way that no other First Lady has taken on...she is fabulous and I applaud her!

Angry? Try passionate! If Michelle had to kick every butt in the cabinet to get her husband back on track to what he was promising in '08, the harder the better! Some of you may feel quite threatened by a woman that can think and act on her own but I love it! Women are more stable, less impulsive, more fair, and generally kinder than men. We could use a lot more of them and their influence in our governments at every level.

I was raised in an integrated community of highly educated people but Michelle to me is like so many black women today. my image of her -With her arms akimbo she yells that she is not proud to be an American - do you think Rice or Coretta would act this way? Her college thesis is about her racist problem not ours. I am not proud of her and I am embarrassed that she is trying to be someone that she isn't. She and her husband are facades.

The stereotype of a strong, confident black person as "angry" is nothing more than racism, no matter how you slice it. Michelle Obama is guaranteed her right of free speech under the constitution, just the same as all the white people are.

Michelle Obama's undergraduate thesis-- rather than evidence of her supposed racism-- is a valuable insight into the cultural perspective of a minority woman.

The demographics of America are significantly different than they were 50 years ago, and they will continue to trend toward more racial and ethnic diversity in the future. To prepare all of our citizens to compete in an increasingly globalized world, to keep our nation strong and vibrant, our country would do well to pay attention to her and to others who do not fit the majority white profile.

"Part of the reason why I will likely not vote for president for the first time in my life. Washington is proving itself to be rather annoying all around as it intrudes into the personal lives of the civilian more and more each day and no one stops them."

This is why you must vote... "no one stops them?" If you don't like what is in DC, you vote them out. No one will ever be perfect, but you must choose the lesser of the two evils.

If you don't vote, don't complain.

Amazing job taking that quote out of context - truly, a fantastic job! Here is the whole paragraph:

Another possible hypothesis created from this study’s
findings explaining why respondents became attached to
Blacks at Princeton is that the mood of Black students at
Princeton during the time that most of the respondents were
attending Princeton was more separationist. As discussed
earlier, most respondents were attending Princeton during
the 70′s, at a time when the Black Power Movement was still
influencing the attitudes of many Blacks.

It is possible that Black individuals either chose to or
felt pressured to come together with other Blacks on campus
because of the belief that Blacks must join in solidarity to
            combat a White oppressor.

She wasn't taking this position, she was trying to explain why certain people behaved a certain way and you mistakenly (deliberately?) attributed it to her own opinion. Shame on you, sir.

I think when people say they are Italian American, German American, Irish American or Black / African American it just acknowledges their origin of immigration before coming to this country. It's not about race it's about pride and acknowledging where your family came from originally.

I just wish Ms. Obama would stop trying to control/crusade for what she deems every American kid in public school should eat...making soda, pizza, etc., illegal in the cafeteria.

I loved having pizza and soda as a kid in the lunchroom, and I was never overweight or fat..and today, I am a healthy weight, exercise, etc., all on my own, without anyone telling me or forcing me to do it.. She needs to target bad parenting styles, not forcing every kid to eat the same thing.

The food itself doesn't make people fat, it's the bad parents encouraging kids to over-eat. Thus, moderation should be promoted instead of outright, strict regulation, and teaching kids to only eat when they feel hungry, and not because they feel bored or simply because extra food is available.

I don't believe Mrs. Obama experiences any more frustration and aggravation and, yes, even anger than any other intelligent, educated, socially aware woman in the United States. The good ol' boys have never gotten it nor, I suspect, will they ever.

When we point out that the Palins, O'Donnells, Bachmanns et.al. come across as mindless bimbos, we're accused of being 'jealous'. Jealous of what? Women who go around shouting "I can't believed I bleeped a black man"? Women who think senators don't need to know and understand the Constitution? Woman who are totally ignorant of American history? Woman who reek of hypocrisy? I think not.

Aleithia, your personal experiences are not exemplary of today's children. Instead of criticizing someone who is working for solutions for ticking time bombs -- which is what the epidemically obese are -- why not spend the time educating yourself on the extent and severity of the problem?

There are people who are so obese, they cannot be diagnosed and treated with standard hospital equipment. The do not fit in the MRI chamber. Don't you find that alarming? The major killers are all caused or exacerbated by unhealthy lifestyle and obesity. If you pay taxes, insurance premiums, any sort of health care, you are paying for them as well. Are you ok with that?

When someone speaks, you hear words. If you are trying to understand the meaning that is being conveyed, concentrating on the choice of words can be quite misleading. No one statement can be taken to mean anything if not taken in the overall context of the persona that made it. That applies to Michelle as well as the bible. Words are an imperfect method of conveying a concept. The listener has as much obligation as the speaker to see to it that the correct message is being conveyed and understood.

I am tired of hearing about how bad it was that blacks were slaves in this coumtry. All those guilty of slave ownership have been dead for quite some time. Blacks in North Africa were selling other blacks into slavery for hundreds of years. Read up on it you'd be surprised. In fact whites have also suffered extesively from it as well. White children have been kidnapped and sold into slavery. Imagine dozens of kids in a cargo hold going across the ocean. Many became sick and died. The ones that lived were sold at auction and those who did'nt were taken further inland to sell or be killed as slave traders did'nt want. Look up Irish history of slavery.

Look up "indentured servant" just another term for slave.

Good point. Both of the Obama's should be pointing out the problems in the Black community with poor parenting practices, which would help bridge the education/employment gap, but that might interfere with his reelection, so it's easier to 'Blame Bush' or 'Blame the Rich'.

Yes, most people would be surprised. The vast majority of slaves were the result of Black tribe-on-tribe warfare in Africa, where the goal was to capture more women to make their tribe bigger and stronger, and typically all the captured men were killed. It was only after Europeans started paying for male slaves that the men were kept alive and taken to the coast for sale by Arab slave traders. Virtually no White men were foolish enough to venture into the interior of Africa.

But none of that excuses the terrible treatment of slaves of all races - some of which still goes on in the Middle East today.

Of Course She Is An Angry Black Woman! Go back and watch the Obama’s first interview
with 60 Minutes. She said she worries everyday when her husband leaves for work, for all black men in America they won’t be shot. I am tired of her judgmental attitude, telling people what to eat or not eat, when she runs out late at night for greasy cheeseburgers, three scoops of ice cream and other crap foods.
I think there are more pressing issues about feeding our children then worrying if ketchup counts as a fruit or vegetable on our nation’s food chart. If she wants to take up a cause, feed American
children and the people. Don’t expect the schools and churches to do this, they are already doing this. Make it a national campaign. Parents and theirchildren don’t care if it’s organic or free range; they are just hungry and are praying they don’t go to bed one more night on an empty stomach. And do no not make this a democrat or republican issue. For peats sake Madam President, pull the shovel away and wipe your face - channel you anger and do something to feed our country, not worry about what belt to wear outside your sweater.

I am tired of hearing about how bad it was that blacks were slaves in this coumtry. All those guilty of slave ownership have been dead for quite some time.

Then close your ears... or have you already? You miss the whole damn point. The slavery days are interesting and horrible and, as you say, are in the past. But the point is that people still think, act, judge, and otherwise stereotype way too much in this country... today... not yesterday, not 20 years ago, TODAY. Not just about blacks, but with Latinos, Muslims, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Whites... whenever a category of can be "summarized" or otherwise stereotypes, we do it.

And I suppose you could say I'm stereotyping for saying this. A classic move. Similar to"I know you are but what am I" first grade retort.

Man what a waste of time to even bother crying about what other people think, who cares?

The first rule is to realize the only person you are going to change today is in the mirror, for gods sake, she should just keep her mouth shut it is bad enough we have to listen to her moronic husband, this country has been run by the most inept people in human history, to even waste your time blabbing about how ridiculous they are does nothing but contribute to your own unhappiness. If all you have to hang your hat on is your etnicity then what a shallow life you live, using your heritage as an excuse for how you behave, hard to move forward when you are cemented in the past, make your own way, forge ahead and forget the ridiculous mumbling of someone who should not be permitted to speak publicly if they are going to act like that, pathetic.

I have no problem with Michelle trying to address obesity in this country that is a huge health care cost and frankly so unnecessary. The problem I have is that once again the WH picks the winners and losers and she doesn't realize what those consequences are.

Let's take twinkies. Hostess filed bankruptcy back in 2004 and finally emerged in 2009. A long time IMO, but they got investment capital to stay afloat. So this could be a similar "helping hand" that Mitt Romney is now being bashed for. This is private money trying to pull a loser company out of the gutter. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. In this particular case, their fixed costs, meaning labor and benefits did not allow them to cut the price of their product and thus become more competitive. So they just hoped that all boats float which did not happen and partially because sugar products are bashed by the WH, specifically by Michelle. So while I agree with her that eating twinkies is not a good idea for anybody trying to keep down their weight, campaigning against sugar products means that their sales will hopefully diminish and be consumed less. Well apparently people heeded her word to some extent, and now twinkies is back again in the red. So they are losing market share and their fixed costs are killing them. That means 19,000 UNION jobs will be slashed. I imagine this time they are going down.

Years ago, Oprah said negative things about the beef industry. Sales were impacted and the dust up was ugly between the industry and Oprah.

It is the math that his WH does not understand. They call for behavioral changes without realizing that those industries will be financially impacted and jobs will be lost. The same thing is happening in the financial industry right now. Obama blast the industry and the industry lays off. What is even more puzzling is that the LEFT in this country is happy to see those in the financial industry losing their jobs believing they do not deserve the salaries they get. O.k., but the problem is state budgets depend on those big salaries to pay 40 percent of the income taxes in such states as NJ and NY.

When Obama was campaigning for the presidency, Michelle went to SC and told black women voters to vote for color instead of gender. That was to stop Hillary. Do you think that is right?

She should be Above it all; acting dignified, ignoring these kinds of subjects. It makes her look desperate, and small.

Frantic. If there was Racism, why did her husband win the 2008/2009 Election for President by a landslide.

It is the chaos, and non productive Administration that is the real subject. I would be angry as well. What am I supposed to call myself--"An Angry Voter"?

Okay cool...who cares if they are crappy for us and we need to be teaching our kids not to eat them? I loved having pizza and soda as a kid in the lunchroom, and I was never overweight or fat..and today, I am a healthy weight, exercise, etc., all on my own, without anyone telling me or forcing me to do it.. She needs to target bad parenting styles, not forcing every kid to eat the same thing.

The food itself doesn't make people fat, it's the bad parents encouraging kids to over-eat.

Let me guess...you don't have any kids, do you Aleithia?

If Michelle Obama did as you suggest and "targeted bad parenting styles," how do you imagine that would be received by people like you who don't want anyone telling them what to do about anything?

What do you suggest: that parents arrive at school every day at lunch time and remind their kids not to eat the cafeteria junk food?

Schools teach kids one thing about nutrition and do another when they push sodas and junk food.

And "the food itself doesn't make people fat"? Now I've heard everything.

I DID NOT LIE. Michelle absolutely did say to a large group of black women in SC to THIS TIME please vote for color instead of gender. The women in the audience were torn between voting for a black man as president vs voting for a woman to become the 1st woman president. I actually wrote to the woman that produced that article sharing my strong feelings that NOBODY should vote for or against any person based on race or gender. I later saw on video Michelle making her case. Her request was wrong then and it was wrong now.

Do your research. This was very early in the campaign cycle when Oprah was also giving speeches in the south to get black women to vote race vs voting gender.

Race was a huge issue in 2008. Many black conservatives admit today they voted for Obama because he was black and they wanted to see a black man become president. Blacks admitted they voted for Obama because he was black. The same will happen again. Again, race, religion, gender should NOT be the reason anybody votes for or against a candidate.

"I love this job. It has been a privilege from day one." I'm glad she used the word tired instead of angry concerning how she feels, but while she may have duties and responsibilities, she does not have a job in the traditional sense. She did actually acknowledge regretful words have been exchanged. I'm not sure how that would happen unless she was angry? Sorry wrong word; disgruntled. Angry or not, she brought up the racial stereotype, which has little to do with her actual behavior. Maybe she's angry because she thinks she has a job and staffers keep trying to explain that she doesn't. What's the definition of self righteous again? Bad PR for BHO.

                  Kaybeetoys,

First it is entirely possible to dislike someone of another race without it being racial. I agree that there have been some racist comments, but you make everyone who doesn't agree withor like the Obamas out to be racists and that is simply not true.

Second, perhaps instead of making the blatantly false statements that all Hostess snacks are bad for you, maybe you should realize that people can eat a Twinkie or any other Hostess snack, and not be unhealthy as long as they do so in moderation.

Perhaps what Mrs. Obama should be campaigning for is better nutritional education, teach kids how to eat properly and eat Twinkies sparingly and in moderation, instead of just saying they are no good. Eating too many citrus fruits can also be bad for your body.

i'm really getting sick and tired of people throwing out the race card at every turn! and you people who speak of how the black folks was enslaved by the white men,and use it as a tool to try and somehow shame and attack white people should realise that those times are long past and let it go. stop trying to use percieved racism to either get what you want, as an intimidation , or an insult. did white people enslave blacks in the past? unfortunately yes. but that came to an end 150 yrs ago. get on with your lives and let go of the crutches. by the way please Google this....( first legally reconised slave owner in the United States) you will surely find a big surprise!!!!!

aomize: And you should realize that racial prejudice is part and parcel of the human condition and has been since long before the ancestors of present-day African-Americans were brought to this country in chains, bought and sold like animals, and lynched for the color of their skin.

White people should know the history of America. First, the land was stolen from the natives and then slaves were used to work the fields. That is how this part of our continent grew so powerful and prosperous. Don't kid yourself that it happened otherwise.

Ironically, slavery lives on the strongest in the minds of those who want to forget the past.

Boy oh boy....you sure have a quick trigger-finger on the "racist" button !!!

I checked out this article because Mrs. Obama has been pretty quiet over the past year or so and I wanted to lok into the campaign's first use of her as a campaign tool. Outside of the jumping jacks, the occasional obesity stunts, and the "Michelle Obama's Fashionable Looks" segments on MSN's website, one doesn't see much of anything that qualifies as 'news'.

To be honest...in scanning these pages, I've concentrated more on the 'political' more than looking to see if a writer's insult was racist or not. I don't follow 'First Lady's" activities much and wish all First Ladies were kept out of the political end of things. With the limited attention span of the American voter, I'd hope that limited time spent on national events would be spent on more important issues than stories about First Ladies.

First, bob, I completely agree that it is possible to dislike someone of another race without it being about race. Case in point: I think Herman Cain is a fool; yet I fully support, admire and respect the Obamas.

My issue with some of the comments on this article is that they are blatantly racist.

I believe that people can choose to eat junk food in moderation without undo damage to their health, but Michelle Obama's campaign is against childhood obesity, not "Twinkies" per se (which, by the way are not good for you). Some kids grow up having candy bars and sodas for breakfast. Why do you think we have an obesity crisis in this country?

Michelle Obama IS promoting good nutrition (growing vegetables in the White House garden) and exercise for America's children.

She is being criticized while she is doing something positive for the children of this country. In the absence of anything negative to comment on about her work, the negativity about her as a person is clearly a personal attack. Please do not even try to pretend there are not a huge number of blatantly racist comments here.

I call it as I see it, tony. Racism is racism, no matter how anyone tries to pretend otherwise. I would respect your opinion a lot more if you had the guts to admit it.

I don't contend that news articles published about Michelle Obama are racist: I am talking about the comments posted here under this article. You only have to read some of them to see how appallingly prejudiced and hateful some people are toward blacks.

Many of you are so "tired of people throwing out the race card at every turn!" (aomize). I understand the sentiments. However, although slavery (Middle Passage) started 400 years ago, the legality of slavery (those men, women, and children of the Middle Passage) ended just 149 years ago. Many states did not change their constitution to reflect The Constitution of the United States as it relates to the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments. The language in the 13th Amendment should have at least stated, "... and all states are required to amend their constitution effective immediately." Why else did Jim Crow last so long? Generations of U.S. citizens who believe in oppressing Black citizens are alive and well! Why else could Gwinnett County Public Schools in Georgia breed a spirit of slavery at Beaver Ridge Elementary School in Norcross, GA by allowing math teachers send home assignments to third graders stating, "Each tree had 56 oranges. If 8 slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?" Another question was, "If Frederick got wo beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in one week?" This was reported in the news on 1/10/2012! Is slavery over? I don't think so. Am I over it? Yes. The only way for the ideology associated with slavery to end, is for everyone to respond to what happened in Norcross, GA on January 10, 2012! I plan to.

I don't think there are near the number of blatantly racist comments as you seem to think there are. I agree that there are people out there that have candy bars and sodas for breakfast, my uncle was one of them. When he was single all he had in fridge was Snickers and Ale-8s (a soda only available in Kentucky and close to the state line), but the heaviest he ever was 180 lbs. Why? Because he was an active man, always working and keeping busy. Now people sit all day in front of a computer (yes I realize the irony of this statement as I type it), tv or video games and children are the worst for it. Their parents use these items as babysitters. So perhaps instead of Mrs. Obama trying to take these snacks out of schools all together, she should push for schools to have children be more active in school. I have a 9 year old who talks all the time about not having recess but maybe once or twice every couple weeks. You can eat the healthiest foods in the world but if you aren't active you will get fat, whether you eat fruit or Ho-Ho's.

Not enough time in the day to scan every comment...if I notice a couple of many keywords that bore me I don't read the entire comment.

My point is that many on this site fire the 'racist' dart at the drop of a hat without knowing more than 3 written sentences. Some are called "racist" for saying Mr. Obama is a lousy leader or that he should not be re-elected. I couldn't care less about one thing Mrs. Obama has on her mind...racist ! I read comments about how "beautiful" some say she is and that's fine...I believe she is homely...racist !

And all this on this thread began because of a story about a book written about the Obama's...and Mrs. Obama apparently did an interview about not wanting to appear to be "an angry black woman".

I believe Mr. Obama is a terrible leader...if, in fact he can be called a "leader" at all. Racist ?

And I do believe the White House fully intends to bring "racism" into the political mix over the next year because he cannot win re-election without at least matching the vote totals he got in 2008, specifically from the black and hispanic communities. Racist ?

You can be the judge, since you've already called me a "racist" anyway.

Blanche- only 4% of white households owned slaves. There where white slaves Scots especially. The blacks where sold by other blacks in africa(still are today) where the options where being a slave or be genocided like the zulus did to the hottontots. Name a black majority city that is generally clean and safe.

Detroit, Zimbabwe, & South Africa where first world locations until 3rd world populations took over. There is a joke- What did they use in Zimbabwe before candles for light? A. Electricity

steveaa, you should educate yourself about the history of slavery in America.

On the eve of the American Civil War approximately 4 million enslaved African Americans lived in the southern region of the United States of America. The vast majority worked as plantation slaves in the production of cotton, sugar, tobacco, and rice. Very few of these enslaved people were African born principally because the importation of enslaved Africans to the United States officially ended in 1808, although thousands were smuggled into the nation illegally in the 50 years following the ban on the international trade. These enslaved people were the descendants of 12 to 13 million African forbearers ripped from their homes and forcibly transported to the Americas in a massive slave trade dating from the 1400s. Most of these people, if they survived the brutal passages from Africa, ended up in the Caribbean (West Indies) or in South and Central America. Brazil alone imported around five million enslaved Africans. This forced migration is known today as the African Diaspora, and it is one of the greatest human tragedies in the history of the world.

                      @kaybeetoys

So you would have Michelle Obama force every kid in America to eat what she deems "healthy", as well as banning soda in the lunchroom? Wow, that's sure going to solve a lot of problems. (not)

If Michelle Obama targeted bad parenting styles, I don't think it would get her nearly as much flake as her crusade to pan everything not-vegetarian-related in the lunchroom. If anything, ads promoted by Michelle Obama pointing out kids' health and promoting parents to reconsider their tactics [such as my own parents] would open more than a few eyes.

My own parents are overweight, and allow my bother to be very overweight, despite my efforts to point out nicely that because they encourage my brother to eat whatever he wants as well as encouraging it, he's always eating. On top of that, my parents do not seem to care about changing their own lifestyles and exercise, or are too lazy to do so, instead spending hours on the computer playing games, watching TV, etc., after work.

Maybe, just maybe, someone like Michelle Obama could help give advice to those who listen, without outright forming an "iron grip" over the public school system's lunch programs.

Schools also do not "push" sodas and junk food, especially not by simply having sodas and junk food available. There's plenty of other food in the cafeteria besides that to eat. [In my middle school, we were treated to a full salad bar, which many kids ate from.]

Yes. Believe it or not, Big Macs do not make people fat (watch the documentary "Fat Head" for more evidence). No one is forcing anyone to eat at McDonald's, Burger King, etc., and no one is forcing these people to over-eat when they do go to McDonald's.

It's people making the decision to eat a lot of Big Macs/Whoppers/other harmful food constantly, while being too lazy to get up and exercise and bother to put a little effort into eating less, that makes them fat.

But it really pisses them off when they see I am married to and have children with a BLACK MAN! I have actually had a group of black women try to attack me physically while I was PREGNANT because I wouldn't let them bully me so shut up! You have prejudice and racist people no matter where you go....so it makes one no better to behave the same way as those they are complaining about!

probably because of all the racists in this country (and consistently on these msnbc threads) who INSIST on making race an issue.

News alert - Mrs. Obama IS black. She is attacked for it constantly, sometimes in subtle ways (like with what you said, AW13) and in sometimes horrific ways, like the countless black jokes and doctored images she and her husband suffer through. A Republican state senator is the latest just last week guilty of this.

And she's right about the book. It's nonsense. It's simple People Magazine junk for people looking for anything to hit the Obamas with so they'll glom onto a lie like this book as 'proof'.

There are so many righteous haters in this country it makes me sick.

JCB + numbers could you please provide us with some examples of Michelle Obama getting angry and the reasons? Didn't think so. Again this is what is wrong with America. There is no need to live with a perception, when you can get to know the person.

This whole 'angry black woman' thing is nothing more than a smear campaign started before Obama was elected to office. You devils never sleep do you?

On a different note this President needs our support. Teachers, firemen, police, autoworkers, healthcare workers, most of you would not have a job if it weren't for this President. Yet we stand by while the opposition seeks to constrain his every move. You cannot raise a barn with telepathy, and this President cannot fight for the middle class without your support. Give this President the tools he needs to accelerate the strategic advantage of this nation. That means 70+ seats in the Senate and control of the House.

IF NOT OBAMA IN 2012 WHOM?

Actually there is an independent unit that monitors Rush, and he is correct 99 percent of the time. Tell us all the bad things Rush has said, or the bs he has said. You must have LOADS of things he has said that are wrong. He speaks every day!

Houston, it means I voted for Obama, but would never vote for a man clearly over his head again.

Hey Ron, do you get out much? There have been numerous reports from Obama's staff, and personnel from the WH who give her very low marks, sorry if you have not researched enough or kept abreast to know such things. It's not a smear campaign when it starts with Democrats my friend.

You are a woman. You are an American. Why do you feel the need to add black? Please stop making race an issue.

I have to wonder how many were from white people. I see it as the equivalent of saying, "Get over it, that was back then, nobody is a slave these days...you need to move on."

As though white privilege or racist sentiments are not exampled on these comment boards daily.

My impression of Michelle O. is the day she got off airforce one, in Spain, wearing raggedy ass pair of cutoffs, didn't have her wig on and looked like a homeless street kid. I couldn't help but think about how she is the person that represents America when she goes abroad. That woman has no class.

Maybe that's why we don't see her as much as we was other First Ladies. The Whitehouse probably doesn't allow her out in public as to not embarras the admibistration. They also know she'll probably say something racist or just plain stupid and ruin their chance for a second term.

JCB plus numbers did the research and found your assertions baseless. Besides its not about what other people think now is it, its about doing your homework and providing facts, which my dear friend seem to be bereft in your comments. Was Nancy Reagan and angry white woman when she ran the WH during her husbands tenure? Here are some things to consider.

White perceptions, however unfounded, greatly influence the mass media juggernaut and its depiction of black women. Succumbing to a long-standing stereotype, black women can fall into the category of Sapphire, an archetype whose attributes depict a black woman as an one-dimensional, callous, and uppity critic who suffers from paranoid delusions of persecution.

In contrast to non-white women, white women are multi-dimensional, vision-driven, purposeful custodians of citizenship. For instance, during the failed 2008 Republican bid for the White House, Sarah Palin continued to enjoy the tough hockey mom image even after her unwed, teenage daughter announced her pregnancy.

In media coverage, white women are individuals and warrant a context for their actions. Yet, even as non-white women display so-called white and/or American behavior, the scripted caricatures about black women remain intact. Using a host of media depictions of Obama, Sharron Sherrod, and Maxine Waters and contrasting these women with Palin and Christy O’Donnell, I argue that, at anytime, the depiction of non-white women can easily revert to one-dimensional Sapphires who threaten white [re: American] civility.

So you see JCB+numbers you are realy only demostrating your longstanding prejudiced without justification view because you see it as a threat to 'White Civility'.

                          How's that for research?

IF NOT OBAMA IN 2012 WHOM?

The angry black woman is alive and well in this country far to often, think Atlanta. Michelle, the reason you come off that way is because you are that way. You are what you do and say. Apparently the title fits you. You earned it every step of the way, and even suck up CBS can't put a spin on it. Maybe they can do another 60 Minutes spin job once again, or maybe you should just stay off the TV.

I totally agree with Mrs President. People tend to mold other people's thinking about people they disagree with and not giving people opportunity to know those peoples as individuals and that is the trend that cause more harm than good to us as a country. "Because I dislike you, your view or people like you therefore I'll make everyone else dislike you, your views and your co - how good is that?". Like Mr President always say, "lets work on what we all can agree on and go from there."

By the way, we should honor those in authority and our leaders should not enslave us either.

I owe my allegiance to any President of United States Of America (previous, present and future). I am not all knowing and should not expect everyone to be. People like negating others. Mrs President is making a change in her own way with our children. Lets make a change in our own little world starting with our hearts. Then we'll heal the world and make it a better place for everyone. Thank you for making a change in your hearts and the world for our future generation.

                              Keybeetoys,

So basically what you are saying is that anything any first lady does is not available for criticism? Even if she lavishly spends money going to Spain while thousands of Americans were losing their jobs, or the same could be said for any trip? I wouldn't venture to say that she is an angry black woman, I would venture to say that she is an Alpha female WOMAN that may not like her life interfered with. That is by all means her choice and I don't have an issue with it. However, when you present yourself in a certain fashion, and individuals have an opportunity to observe and state their opinion they instantly become racists.

The reason that most of the previous first ladies other than Elenore Roosevelt and Hillary Clinton were not "attacked" is because they left the politics to their spouse and pushed towards utilizing their position in a suggestive manner...not a forceful manner.

Don't even talk about fast food issues when the first lady states that we have to watch how we eat and her husband is standing in line at 5 guys. If you can't practice what you preach then you shouldn't be preaching.

Update...that is what is called a double standard. Do as I say BUT WAIT...don't do as I do.

Well I think there is a difference between an adult eating five guys sparingly and CHILDREN eating chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, pizza, french fries, philly cheese steaks, popcorn chicken bowls, cheeseburgers, tator tots, breaded chicken sandwiches, or nachos for lunch every day. Also it doesn't matter if these kids are currently skinny or fat. There is a whole host of problems that affect children that receive poor nutrition in their later lives including cardiovascular diseases.

And both of those first lady's have also undergone criticism during their times in the WH. I am astonished to read that you believed they left the politics to their husbands... I mean, that just isn't true.

I am not referring to criticism of the President's policies or performance as president. I myself have serious misgivings about his policies.

But just read the posts on here or any thread dealing with the Obamas and all you see is reference to their color or citizenship or her "uppitiness".

If that ain't racist, I don't know what is.

I've been following this semi-news story and I have to agree wholeheartedly with the First Lady. In addition I find it interesting that everyone is on HER case for creating conflict and tension and no one seems to call Emanuel to task. Now it seems that there has been much written about Rahm and his thuggish approach. In the end he seems to come across as a true generator of conflict. Rahm would tick off a Good Humor Man with his unseemingly boorish, nasty and intimidating in-your-face approach. Good for Michele Obama for speaking up, and glad to see Rahm is gone. He's in a good job as Mayor of Chicago where being a thug is apparently one of the job descriptions.

Emanuelle said he wasn't proud to be an American? You'll have to cite your source on that, before you compare him to this country-bashing whore.

This country still has a problem with strong, intelligent women. People dissing Ms Obama hold up a Pat Nixon for an example of how they want their women to be. That era is long over. Hang in there, Michelle!

"Intelligence" and "attitude" are two entirely different things. Michelle Obama may be intelligent, but now her ATTITUDE has definitely been exposed. The truth has finally come out on her, but there is likely much, much more that has been repressed by the media.

This country has a problem with whiners and bitchers...and elitist pigs who spend ten million dollars of their money on summer vacations for the year. And women whose pastor is a Nazi and a racist. And women whose pals say things like, " Charles Manson and his gang slaughtering those people then eating in the midst of their dead bodies is soooo cool!" And saying they should have planted more bombs in the sixties. And being associated with community organizing groups that have no problem with giving people money to start child prostitution rings..that is just for starters.

I did not find Mrs. Obama's remark about her pride in America to be that damning. I am a white (sort of ecru southern mediterranean skin color) woman who is often not proud of my society, and I have not suffered the bigotry that every woman of color faces, no matter what her economic status. I completely get it: Mr. Obama's election in some ways redeems a minuscule part of that historical tragedy that was slavery and is nowadays racism. However, that is not why I am happy that Obama is president: he's smart and articulate, true, but I can see that he also sees the systemic problems in our society and is trying to do something about them. He may have underestimated the ability of the loyal opposition to stonewall his every idea, BUT I am going to give him another 4 years and a cooperative congress, then I'll see how his policies can be moved forward. As for Mrs. Obama having influence, I say that's a good thing: she's smart, energetic and most importantly, a mother. I hope she can keep the president on track with policies that are going to benefit families. Obama 2012.

That "quote" was NEVER made by Michelle Obama and has been debunked over and over again. But the truly pathetic far right never tires of lying about this very great woman so why am I surprised?

Would that be the bigotry found in the lyrics brainwashing a generation of black people? She has every reason to love the white man, and hate her own. No, she doesn't get a pass because she's black. She hates America, and we hate her.

That's right, Tina. What some of them don't get is this:

“She (Michelle Obama, who has white and native American ancestry as well as African slave ancestry) is representative of how we have evolved and who we are,” said Edward Ball, a historian who discovered that he had black relatives, the descendants of his white slave-owning ancestors, when he researched his memoir, “Slaves in the Family.”

“We are not separate tribes of Latinos and whites and blacks in America,” Mr. Ball said. “We’ve all mingled, and we have done so for generations.”

Some of the most racist people in America would be dumbfounded to discover that they have black ancestry and/or black relatives themselves.

Others might be surprised to learn that black Americans have roots that run much deeper and longer on American soil than do the descendants of European immigrants.

President Obama and his wife have proven that race is neither a qualification nor a disqualification for intelligence, honor, and class.

There will ALWAYS be people who don't like one thing or another about the Obamas as long as they are in office, just because they are still angry that Barack Obama was elected president. Michelle is a force in her own right and a lot of people just project thier own insecurities, fears and anger onto her as they probably envy/dislike the fact of her position as the first African-American First Lady in history. That still does not sit well with a lot of folks. Gibbs and Emmanuel have been around her for quite awhile BEFORE the White House, so why didn't this supposed strife show up before then? As as she pointed out in the article above, her staff deals with his staff if any issues arise. She is hands on w/her children, but I think it would be too much to expect that she is so much hands on that she has to dip into Oval Office affairs to make herself an effective First Lady. A lot of America needs to grow up and get over thierselves. As much as certain factions of this country want to "go back to the way it was" that is not going to happen. Deal with it.

stanboy, it's so simple to search "Kenya" that it's inexcusable that you don't know that Kenya is located on the continent of Africa. Further, with the President's father being Kenyan and his mother American, he is one of few actual "African Americans".

Hahaha, anyone that thinks that Romneycare will beat Obama hasn't considered Mitten's record yet. His 'private business' record with Bain Capital will really resonate with all those that saw their company chopped up, sold off and jobs outsourced and Romney pushing a wheelbarrow of money from the scene of the crime.

Agree with Rick - someone who's half african (his father) and half american (his mother) truly fits that description better than any person, of african decent, born in america to parents also born in america (and sometimes, several generations through at this point).

It's interesting, I know a handful of people who ID as americans...but are heavily involved in their "native lands"...whether it be Irish fests, or Polish fests...or Greek Orthodox church, or living in a dutch area of the state and going to tulip time festivals...all thats an aside, they dont say "im greek american"...because the greek, is obvious...duh.

Irish...Polish...Dutch...Greek (just to name a few)

It seems to me, the only people living "truly american" lives...are the ones who cant figure out their genetic heritage...or realize they are just muts, a complete mix of all of europe...where's the pride in that?

The entire term "African American" used to describe someone's race is just ridiculous. For one thing, someone can be from Africa and be white. For another thing, most blacks in this country have never even been to Africa by many generations, and third since when is what continent you are from describe your race? Ok then my parents were from Italy so i guess that would make me the European American race. I mean what the heck would that be exactly.

I suggest you take a good look at the "You're Just Jealous" trope and re-think in claiming that Democrats against Obama "are just jealous".

"In politics, every time a member of the opposition says something critical about the current administration's politics (which is what the opposition is supposed to do anyway), there is a member of the majority who claims that the opposition is just jealous because they lost the last election, usually without making the effort to try to justify his or her own point of view."

You know, I really am an old lady, and I read a lot of these comments looking for intelligent opposition to Obama. I'm am willing to read intelligent discussion of policies and why they are not the right path. But that's not what I read. What I read is name calling and less-than-subtle bigotry ... it's like listening to playground insults. So please ... if you are opposed to the President, his wife, his children, his dogs, his aides, etc., please lay out a reasoned argument supporting your opposition ... what you are doing now simply reveals your own personal problems and lack of rational thought. And it certainly will not swing over voters to your side of the equation. If anything, it works just the opposite. We all like to know we associate with people who are reasonably intelligent, and the way you frame your opposition to Mr. Obama does not make you a desirable person to agree with.

Your mama should have washed out your mouths with soap and sent you to your room to reflect on your bad behavior.

Respect has gone out the window....anything seems to go....especially with the written word. Perhaps it's the anonymity of the internet and TV. I've just finished a book about him and his origins ... having lived in the Middle East for about 10 years ... he doens't look Arab, and just because his father was an east African ... that does not mean Middle Eastern. His grandfather was a Luo tribe Kenyan who was Muslim, but his father was no religion, nor was his White mother.

How about all the back door deals he makes in secret (transparent, my ass). How about every time he opens his pie-hole, lies spew forth from the yawning opening. How about the fact that he makes me puke every time I look at his mug. It's scary enough that he is in that office but what is even scarier is that so many people in this country lack enough critical thinking ability to look at that "birth certificate" and realize it was as phony as a $3 bill. They just accepted it without question and then, like toddlers attracted by the next shiny, dangling object, their attention was distracted by the "killing' of Osama bin Laden a few days later. God help us. There should be some sort of intelligence test for voting. There are just too many stupid people who think it's another American Idol contest.

And, Brenda, if he makes so many secret back door deals - how do you know? Like Bush/Cheney didn't have deals with Haliburton and all the oil cronies???? Are the two of you just totally lacking in intelligence or do you just lie to see how many stupid people will believe you??? Brenda - if you see STUPID people, it's just because you're looking in the mirror!

And if you're going back to the birth certificate that EVERYONE with a brain knows is real, that pretty much says it all! You are very lucky there is no intelligence test for voting. Looks like you'll get to participate in 2012 after all.

You cannot raise a barn with telepathy. Give this president what he needs (a filibuster proof Senate 70+ seats for Democrats) and control of the House if you love this country. Failure to do so will simply perpetuate more stagnation in Congress.

I will bet anyone on here a months salary that if this president had the full cooperation of the House and the Senate the US economy would be firing on all cylinders and we would be much further down the road to debt and deficit reduction. Any takers?

I have nothing against Obama's dog or his children. In fact I feel bad for the children having to live like that must not be easy. I can debate with you the proposals or policies I do not like. The ones that irritateme the most are the job creation proposals. They spend a WHOLE lot of money and only create a temporary fix. Once the jobs are done the people go back to being unemployed. If I knew my job was not going to last long I would be saving that money I earned for when I am out of a job again. This does not stimulate the economy. I also Have a major issue with his connections to GE and Solyndra. There is also project fast and furious (he had to be partly involved). As for his wife, I do not like her campaign on child obesity. I do not think being told what and what not to eat is for the government to decide. I know she is not a politician, but she has the influence.

Jim - in your mind only. The recession was never going to be a quick fix under any President. Anyone with even a modicum of intelligence knows that. To blame length of the recession on Obama is unbelievable and shows a lack of understanding of the true situation. And, even with control of the House and Senate, the GOP still had enough power to filibuster each and every action he wanted to take - and they did. But, I'm certain you know that. It just doesn't help your half-baked argument. Nothing does.

Jim, no American President has ever had or will ever have control of the House and Senate. Our system of government is divided into three separate but equal branches: administrative, legislative and judicial. It was set up that way by the Founding Fathers as a way to avoid the concentration of power into the hands of one person or group. That's high school civics.

Had Obama had the cooperation of Congress for the past three years, he would certainly have been able to achieve more of the agenda he was legally elected to pursue. Instead, Republicans vowed from Day One to block any progress initiated by this president. Do you remember your oracle Rush Limbaugh saying he wanted Obama to fail?

Why in the hell do you think that Democrats got their proverbial asses handed to them in the November 2010 elections ?

This is why: the uber-wealthy Koch Brothers hoodwinked a lot of well-meaning but misguided people--aka the Tea Party-- into supporting their no-taxes-on-the-rich/ laissez-faire for big business agenda.

Those of us who support Obama and his agenda believe that after two terms of failed Republican ideology, it's time to try another course, a course based on reality. If Obama's plan is given a fair shot it will succeed.

Why do Republicans want him to fail? That is the same thing as wanting the country to fail.

Republicans want their power back. That is all.

And you know that how? Besides...who needs a book when you have a first lady spending ten million dollars of our money on her Marie Antoinette vacations, hanging with unrepentant terrorists, having a hate filled racist Jew hating Nazi for a minister, hangs out with community organizing groups that try to give money to people to start up child prostitution rings....this woman has no regard for human life, decency, truth or goodness...she is a living demon.

These world trips were not "vacations" they were part of his duties as President. The only place "W" went often was to his ranch on vacation.

Bush took vacations to his ranch and to camp david, almost no cost for the taxpayers for him to stay there. Camp david is outfited with everything he needs to work. Obumas taking an extra plane to Hawaii since they couldn't fit both their heads into airforce one cost the taxpayers over $1million.

steveaae - not true. Bush, Laura and the girls took vacations all over the world. And, as with the current President and First Lady, they paid all of their own expenses for the vacations - except for what is needed for the Secret Service. Bush spent more time on his ranch than he did at the White House. He is credited with taking the most vacations of any president ever - including Obama. But, the truth isn't what you want is it?

And, the stupid comment about the heads? Worthless!

Why is it that no conservative ever wants to talk about Bush? Might it be that his was an abysmal eight years in office? That he dragged us into a costly and un-winnable war under false pretenses? That he governed with an ideology that had no basis in reality? That he grew the government and shrank the surplus? Bush was arguably the worst president in my lifetime, and I've seen a few come and go.

Bush has been essentially invisible since he left office. Does anyone ask his advice? Does any Republican ask for his help campaigning, or seek his endorsement?

Why do you think that is, tony???

How conveniently you forget the recent past when it suits your purposes.

The image of Ms. Obama is that of a very angry woman. The fact that she is black seems incidental, other than that there may be feelings of inadequacy to fan the anger. It appears, outwardly, that she has little to be angry abount since she has spent the past few years living large at the expense of her subjects (she stated that she does enjoy being referred to as "your Excellency"). The parade of vacations and junkets to exotic locales should have provided enough distraction to cool the anger. God knows, we have spend enough on her.

The 'Your Excellency" thing was a joke on a comedy show. Considering her many personal accomplishments I doubt that she has feeling on inadequacy. Traveling on state business is not a vacation. The image of Mrs Obama I've seen is that of a happy, smiling woman. I'm sure the image shown on whatever show you watch to get your talking points is always showing a picture where the First lady is frowning, but maybe they are doing that for a reason.

bill-318747: Apparently to you and too many other people, any woman of independent thought and unapologetically-expressed opinions is "angry". But that's your opinion and not fact.

I am a middle-aged white woman who has spent most of my life not-so-proud of my country, too, but there's a large gulf between recognizing and accepting that our country has and still does commit a great many acts that belie the unrealistically-shiny image too many others want to perpetrate.

If the United States was a person, judging themself as if they had no faults, never made mistakes, could do whatever they wanted regardless of the impact on others and thinking they were better than everyone else just because they existed then we would be that arrogant and insufferable egotist we all knew in school. Some of the others in our group would hate us, some would be indifferent and some would cravenly suck up to us. Gee, sounds like exactly the way things are!

As far as the mean-spirited and critical dissing of Michelle Obama, I take it with a grain of salt because I have lived long enough to see every First Lady of every age, race, and political persuasion take the same kind of back-biting crap. I like her, but she doesn't need defending by me or anyone else.

But, bill-318747 , let me suggest you look this up, since you certainly won't believe it coming from me, but Barack and Michele Obama have travelled less and taken less time "off" than George W. Bush had at the same point in his presidency. So, unless you were equally, publicly critical of Bush, I suggest you shut your mouth.

It would be interesting to know where you collect your information relative to the First Family's vacation expenses. Compare that figure with the actual vacation expenses of former President George W. Bush (pre 9/11), and try to support it in any way acceptable to the American people. Can't!

All presidents do it and they get more expensive every year with the costs of security and such. The only reason people give a crap now is because the media is turning it into front page news instead of a side article due to the fact the country is broke and it costs money.

I'm not going to try to get to any deeper meaning with my comment, but why do men not have a stereotypical moniker when it comes to being 'angry'? ANY angry woman (righteously or not) is called a "bi— — _," no matter what her skin color. Angry men are seen as go-getters, assertive, and focused. Unfair enough to make an angry woman angrier.

After more personal experience with this than I care to remember, I can verify that all people get angry. And women, regardless of size, shape, or color have explained the endless multitude of my shortcomings in several languages and at various volumes, some approaching a 747 on takeoff. I don't think there is anything Michelle Obama has done that will either help or hurt her with her detractors; their stream of vitriol will be there regardless. Any action / inaction is an excuse for their attacks, so I think she has the right attitude.

It's nothing new, racism is here to stay until this world is diminished. The heart of man has to be changed by God, believers or not. I believe if any other black woman was in office it would be the same. There are still people who believe that people of a different color than them, do not represent what they represent. It is very sad, that we have had caucasian women in the Oval office since the beginning, and they have never been scrutinized as much as this woman who happens to be black, which at every take she is always mentioned as "Black whatever". For people to indicate don't use the race card, you're delirious, in this society, race is used so much, in so many different ways. No president has ever had to go through such disrespect in this prestigeous position. The presidential office has always been one of honor and respect. Now I hear so much disrepect with this president in office, from the media, other congress members, its terrible. I never read of any other countries treating a person that has this high honor being treated like this. America use to set the standard, I thought. There has been a change of times, the world has changed, the hearts of man have gotten harder, evil is more prevalent. I commend Mrs. Obama for being a strong woman, the country rests on the shoulders of strong men and women no matter what their race is. God Bless her and her family, God please Bless America.

                                          Node-4,

Isn't it interesting that anger is touted as a virtue when tea-baggers express it at the world around them? And what are their major complaints? Lazy poor people are getting something I'm not! People in wheelchairs are collecting money from the public dole, but it's their own fault they're in the chair in the first place! Liberals are keeping ME from realizing my version of the American dream! All this makes me so mad I'm going out in the streets and demonstrate and then jump in my Mercedes and go home to my house in the suburbs. I'm soooooo victimized!

But if the First Lady of the US dares to suggest she is tired of being labeled as an angry black woman by the lower 10% of the country's intellect through distortion, context manipulation, ignoring the truth and out-and-out lies, then SHE is a b---- or even, as I just saw in one truly enlightened post, a "she devil". There has never been anything ever published or aired that has come close to indicating she is "angry"! But if she said she was, I wouldn't blame her one bit, and the tea party should hold her up as a hero for acting like them.

@dksouthern: your first statements says it all. I'm amazed at how the TP'ers have been so successful at putting everyone in the country on pins and needles. *YOU* can't have a bad day and dare not raise an eyebrow where someone might see it; while the TP and conservative news media openly celebrates their outrage .... in fact, what really sets them off is when you are not mad enough to meet their criteria (what - you don't know what the requirements for appropriate response were - HOW DARE YOU!?!?!!) on some particular item.

It's the height of hypocrisy for these TP'ers and dittoheads to rail about Michelle Obama's behavior when the reality is none of them could pass an anger management class given by Yosemite Sam.

Because we are consistently reminded we are black. Take the time to look at some of the comments of people. I am one person who doesn't lead with my color but I am truly reminded of it on a daily basis by the people I encounter. So just try and remember it is a two way street.

That's a fundamental problem with how we raise our white children to view the world. Being "colorblind" is insulting, because we're teaching our kids to think of white as the default, and we're shocked when people of color don't want to go along with the "let's pretend everyone is white" game. We're not doing anyone a favor by ignoring their race, because what we're saying is, "I will treat you the same way I would treat a white person, even though you are not white, as long as you will also ignore your own race and pretend everything is okay even when it's not." It's making it a lot easier for people to blame racism on the affronted party, which is happening in a lot of the comments on this story.

There are good and bad people of every race. The blacks in africa sold convicts and defeated tribes as slaves so you should look to africa if you want to find the good blacks.

Black people have such thin skin. Time to toughen up and put on the big boy pants. Every minority in this country experiences episodes of racism. It seems the rest handle it like adults and move forward with their lives. Blacks fall helpless to the ground in the fetal position. Oh, poor you. Everyone owes you something.

You've done a great job here demonstrating your racist attitude. You're so out of touch with the reality of your prejudice that you can't even recognize that.

The actual truth here is that the first lady never said that about her country before or after his election. From my memory as I do not have the original statement in front of me and neither do you people; is that the whole thing was taken completely out of context.

Mrs. Obama has been a terrific first lady and you can tell that she does a wonderful job with her children. These two people whether you like thier politics or not, have both been gracious and dignified in their respective roles and that is something you cannot take away from them, no matter how crazy you are.

Must be my ears but is sure as heck sounds like she said that to me.

Granted people have made more out of it than they should and anyone listening to what she said cannot find fault with her stating what she did. She never implied the fault was the "country" she simply meant imho that for the first time her country was making her proud to get past cliches and prejudices.

In general people need to stop being so overly sensitive and demanding that everything said is always 100% PC. A thicker skin and being faced with the truth is sometimes eye-opening. As much as this "country" needs to understand why Mrs Obama said what she said, she should also understand why a lot of the population view her as the stereotype. And btw being viewed as the "angry woman" isn't necessarily bad. It just means she's passionate about some of her views.

Bill, you are mistaken. The "actual truth" is she made that statement when hubby got the nomination. Google it or go to a network news archive.

By the way, how is it you know "she does a wonderful job with her children"? All I've seen is photo-ops.

Bill-314065 - Mrs. Obama, our First Lady, did use that phrase. She said it in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and then in Madison.. Here's Jack tapper, correspondent for ABC writing about this:

You'll also find inside a link to the speech given by Mrs. Obama (the would be First Lady at the time) in Madison:

"What we have learned over this year is that hope is making a comeback. It is making a comeback. And let me tell you something -- for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. And I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment. I've seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues, and it's made me proud."

There's also another glimpse of her being an "angry" because people wouldn't see her way. "... I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment."

We must not forget we have entered an election year and the release of Jodi Kantor's book isn't by accident. Having read Ms. Kantor's newspaper articles, I find her tendency to exaggerate about most of the subject matter she writes about a ongoing problem. But I am sure she will find an audience. For Ms Kantor, I am sure Michelle Obama seems formidable...I will bet Ms. Kantor loved the film, THE HELP"...it is difficult for some peole to deal with those who are compettve in intelligence, good taste and accomplishment. Methinks Ms. Kantor works better with black women who require her benevolence and sympathy...and of course, that is not Michelle Obama!

I think Michelle Obama is doing a great job. She beautiful, intelligent and a good asset to her husband.

People need to sell books, make money and criticize. I might be willing to read the book if it critiqued all past first ladies in the White House. First Lady, Laura Bush is a chain smoker. Lets pick her apart discussing what a bad example she set forth for young women and details of that car crash she was in when she killed a young man.

I don't blame Michelle for intervening on her husband's behalf. I don't think he had/ has the best advisers.

All of you republicans that scream she should not be involved in her husbands presidency - short memories, the wife of your sainted Ronald Reagan was involved up to her eyebrows in the running of the country in the final years of her husbands tenure since he was in the early stages of dementia. Remember her whispering answers to Ronald during a press conference? Very short memoires. I think our current first lady is doing a great job and her interest in children and nutrition is long overdue. Parents who feed their kids fast food and food high in fat and sugar need to wake up it is costing us millions in insurance and health care costs.

Apparently the Democrats are forgetting Hillary's role as FIRST lady. She was more like the voice for the office of the president.

On the contrary, the First Lady does have official duties, she is the hostess of the White House. If you don't think that means anything, you've never had the responsibility of planning a dinner for even a small gathering. It is nothing to sneer at. Plus she has her personal campaign of tackling childhood obesity. Barbara Bush had literacy, most if not all of the modern First Ladies had some sort of apolitical cause thta they were actively involved in.

I do not see her having a real job. Her husband was elected, That does not equate the people "hiring" her. Who would be the hostess if we were to elect a bachelor?

Being the First Lady is a very trying job and people like both of you don't have enough sense to know what it entails. We are lucky she is strong and smart enough to do a very good job. (Gulfwar - really? you would stoop that low? It says more about you than it ever does about our First Lady and none of what it says is good.)

The Kennedy (prohibition runners) Family of Taxachusettes is Very Irish, very White and Very Powerful....and when Obama first took office Uncle Teddy was the "Grand Elder Statesman" of the Democrat Party....and that took away some of Barry's thunder.

It is good to see that both families are fading into obscurity and the Obama's will too.

Yea georgia- our first to have the nations credit rating downgraded. The first to have unemployment numbers like the great depression. And the first to suspend posse comitatus, the first to publicly assassinate an American citizen without a trial. I don't think we can handle any more of these firsts

How about being pissed that thousands of americans drinking water and health have been compromised by Fracking for natural gas and our GOVERNMENT is not only allowing it but PROMOTING it.. Maybe she should be pissed at that.

What the h are you talking about Lame? I was against the pipeline over the aquifer too...they changed its route, and STILL Obama is against it. Because he is getting money from both the unions AND the environmentalists..this man is an enemy of truth ..he is all about ego and power.. you should be able to see that. And I don't want to have to choose between energy bills and food bills.. the government cranks up our energy costs by keeping us from using our own energy.. if we could drill, Gasoline would immediately drop considerably.

                                                    JB:

You do know that oil will be sold on the worldwide market - right? Why won't they build a refinery on the Great Lakes and distribute from there. That's the ONLY way to guarantee the oil is used to reduce our energy dependence. Piping it to the coast merely makes it available to China while we shoulder the risk of an environmental disaster. China has become heavily invested in the company because it wants that oil for themselves.

Why would the unions want Obama to stop the pipeline? That makes no sense - not that anything you write does. Do you think about the krap you read and hear, and use critical thinking skills to separate the nonsense from facts? The pipeline greatly benefits a Canadian oil company, a Canadian union, and China while providing less than 1000 short term US jobs, and it does very little to reduce the price of gasoline.

Stereotypes exist for a reason. If there weren't so many angry black women, then there would not be that stereotype. Even my closest apparently happy and nice black female friends have all confided in me at some point that they all secretly have a problem with "white people" in general or with white females. There is definitely still a lot of deep-rooted anger in the black community and it's stupid to pretend it doesn't exist.

Instead of denying her deep rooted anger, maybe Ms. Obama as the first lady should be seeking methods to eradicate the pointless, deep-rooted anger that is being passed down through generations in black families.

                                                    Meagan..

Apparently you've spent considerably more time in African-American homes than the average African-American has, so I'll defer to your expertise...

Tell me, African-Americans should no longer be angry that negative stereotypes are launched against them because EVERYONE knows that African-Americans are just seething with "deep-rooted" anger...Is THAT your position?

                                                    Tell me..

Is pretending that there isn't still a lot of "deep-rooted" anger more stupid than pretending that there is NOT "deep-rooted" racism towards black people?

Is denying your "deep-rooted" racism towards black people that has been "passed down through generations" pointless and something that should be eradicated?

                                                    I know you're the expert, and all..but,

Your claim that black people, if true, just inherently get angry towards white people for no reason and at the drop of a dime, then how did they manage to sing spirituals while doing slave labor, pick cotton at the tip of the whip, sit in at Woolworth lunch counters, sit at the back of restaurants and busses, endure lynchings, mob violence, fire hoses and German Shepards and STILL call this country their home. Tuskeegee Airmen valiantly fought for this country and returned home to be treated as subhuman.

I digress, though. All those lynch mobs, fire hose wielders, Tea partiers ALL have every reason to get angry...My bad, White people don't get angry. Unless, of course, somebody wants to raise taxes to provide healthcare for all or some black teenager whistles at a white women (supposedly).

I'm sorry, did I just usurp your authority in this matter?

I apologize. Gee, I'm starting to sound a little angry....

                                                    Wow, you're right!

They are angry that the latinos are taking over. They are angry that all the jobs are being taken away from them. They are angry that someone besides them, are living the american dream. Therefore, the angry whites should be able to relate to Michelle, the angry black woman.

YOu want jobs for everyone, and America to be successful economically? Do just the opposite of whatever Obama is doing. I haven't seen one American who cares about skin color. Obama is an egomaniac who declared he was the best president since Linclon and FDR. He pals around with unrepentant psycho terrorists Bernadine Dorn and Bill Ayers, who got him his start in politics. He wants to bring America down.

It is really shame that it take a Half Black man to become President to expose all the racism that has been hidden for years. Say how you really feel. You hate the fact that a Black Man is in the White House. Who said that only a white man could rule this country. Shame on anyone that is not accepting a person as they are. And for your info. All Black women are not angry.

They are angry a black man is in the White House. They are angry that the latinos are taking over.

The best part of this is Latinos dislike you more than Whitey. When they take over, and they will, you can look back at European control with nostalgia.

What are the Latinos really inheriting from Whites? A broke-ass, run-down shell of a once-glorious empire. Grats?

I am so happy President Obama got elected! If he had not been, then America would still be regarded as a "post racial society" by the rest of the world. Now the world is seeing that it is still the same nasty racist society it was in the 1950s!!! Sad, so very sad for all these young people growing up in this country! The hatred for President Obama(a truly brilliant, educated man, wonderful, compassionate, articulate man) that they are now willing to try getting a man to run this country whose only claim to fame is the fact that when he was governor, his state was 49th in the nation in job creation. The racist try to blame president Obama for the mess George Bush created. Interestingly when Bush w anh his cronies were creating the economic mess the silence was deafening. Of course none of the "nice people" questioned Bush`s academic credentials either!!! Michelle Obama is a lady I tell my daughters to emulate & I tell my sons to look at the grace the President shows despite all the racist vitriol that is consistently thrown at him!! He is truly a great human being!!

She also should know that she was destined to be Hillary-ed. No matter what she does she will be criticized. She also helped bring that about with that famous quote of "proud". Toughen up girlfriend or go home would be my advice.

They will do another 4 years. You repubs tend to look at these polls and think you know it all. But believe this, the minority vote will tip this election in the Presidents favor. The minorities do not participate in those television polls. So those polls are worth nothing but tv ratings. There is no way a non moderate republican is going to be voted as President. The independents and minorities will not allow it. So if the repubs want to win the presidency, only Huntsman is the true moderate republican for the GOP capable of winning the independent vote.

I think Obama has MORE than a good chance to win again..he has the lyiing fascist media on his side, he has millions of dollars to attack the truth with and he has his community organizing groups who will take time off from giving people money to start child prostitution rings in order to violently force through phony votes for him. America has had it, in my opinion.
