Why was the issue of the pension paid to senate and congress for life after only serving 4 years (if they are booted out early) with cost of living increase! This is a job perk that should go only pay for time in seat. Also Gingrich wa one of the Congress that voted for 30% wage increase for themselves during the recession in '80's so sad that was not brought up when he said how well he did at this time. If we had internet at that time more would have been done...we did not have the voice we do now with internet.
I think it does pay only for time in the seat and is no different than the pension plan for all other federal employees, including paying into social security. Same with health care.
But, I am open to being corrected on this, if wrong. Just please provide a source for your information.
There may be "confusion" in that most of Congress is re-elected year after year, and thus build-up a lot of generous retirement benefits...pension and health care.
Instead of requiring them to "serve" longer to get retirement, I'd rather do away w/ Congressional retirement. I don't really like term limits because it is an anathema to Democracy. It limits whom voters are allowed to vote for. But, if you do away w/ retirement, put them on Social Security - they'll have to quit after a few years and get a real job to build a retirement. A bonus will be a sincere effort to improve SS
Members of Congress (and all other federal employees) aren't eligible until "vested" - i.e. have been employed for at least five years and paying into the plan. I have no idea why Ron Paul would object to paying into a pension plan? Maybe he thinks he can invest better? Or, thinks it too generous and hence "unfair" to taxpayers?
Here is why he doesn't participate in the pension plan:
"Members of Congress are elected by the people to handle the affairs of this nation in a responsible, efficient manner, not to enrich themselves for a lifetime," he said. "To participate in a pension plan at taxpayers expense would for me be hypocritical and immoral. I hope everyone in the 105th Congress will do as I have done: reject the pension and prepare for retirement without burdening the taxpayers for decades to come. To do any less is to perpetuate what is at it's most basic level an arrogant insult to the people we were elected to represent."- Ron Paul
Well, I'll take that as the second of the choices of reaasons I offered. But, members of Congress DO pay into their plan, so it isn't totally free to them. Wonder if Paul pays into social security or Medicare?
Good luck getting congress to pass anything but perks for themselves, and no wonder that everyone and the mother runs for office. Supposedly we have checks and balances, but apparently the Executive and Judicial branches can do nothing to stop this outrageous deficit spending.
REALLY Patriot? You think the executive branch doesn't have EQUALLY bloated salaries/perks? Not to mention that Obama added all those 'non-cabinet' Tsars--each of whom will have gone out and hired a highly paid staff TOO. And the judicial branch ALSO qualifies for all those salaries/perks.
And then lets just examine all the UNION government workers who, while not having the huge salaries/perk packages of Congress et al, STILL have much cushier ones than most civilian workers. And can retire at age 52 fully vested, and then go to work for someone else, and get partially vested in THEIR benefit plans.
Many years ago, I worked for the State of MO as a lowly typist, and after a 3 month training period, I earned 1 and 1/4 days PER MONTH of vacation, and 1 and 1/4 days of sick leave PER month. That is TWENTY SEVEN days of PAID time off per year, for a 22 year old typist. Now, the amount of time earned increased after 5, 10 and 20 years on the job. How many of YOU get 60 days of paid time off on YOUR job?

Rep. Justin Amash, a Congressman from Michigan, explains:
LMAO at Rick....really? An individual who has stated that they would vote for Obama, and you come back with that?
Really? He's really a socialist? My God, you and the rest of Republicans are bat@!$%# crazy! You scream about personal freedoms and the government having too much power, yet you are ready to use government to enforce your religious agenda upon America. Ban Abortion, repeal "Obamacare", make it harder for people to vote, etc, etc, etc.
Franz - That's fine with me...but, why? Romney is probably closer to your political beliefs than Obama, so why would you threaten to vote Democratic, if you don't get the Republican candidate you want?
Stone6, probably because Romney and Obama are both big government guys. However Obama is just as good at socialism and big government than Romney is. What is the difference in Romney care and Obama care? Nothing
a) Neither Gingrich or Paul are going to receive the nomination of the Republican Party. Gingrich thinks he's the smartest guy in the room and no one likes a wise-guy. Paul is a nice little, old man, with eccentric ideas, which sound very good, until they are thought through.
b) If, by hook or crook, either IS nominated, they will not win in a general election. When Americans profess their "conservatism," it means they don't consider themselves raving liberals; it does not mean they embrace a far right agenda. Mainstream America is conservative in that they are deeply suspicious of radical change, to the left or right.
c) Big government? Government spending is different from the size of government itself. Federal government employees have been DECREASING in ratio to the total population, for almost a generation (from a high of 14.5 per thousand to around 8.5 per thousand). The real growth in government, in terms of employees, has been at the state and local levels. So...by all means, transfer more power to the state and local governments and watch "government" grow some more.
Big government parallels the growth in the global power and influence of the United States, which in turn directly impacts our economic growth. I know of no great nation, in history, that either achieved its greatness or sustained it, by "going small."
I never tought in my life time I would get to see not one but a bunch of Sob's wanting to run this country....... and why dont the reporters ask real questions......
3 More ways to improve our government: 1) Get rid of federal tax on fuel 2) Charity starts @ home, not throwing good money after bad 3) Stop playing superman to the world, check ourselves first, protect our borders from the thugs.
These republican debates are a joke because my personnal view is they can't be trusted because of all the rhetoric against Obama. I know they are running against him, but they don't give credit at all and that is not trust worthy. They try to demonize him with everything, and that shows their partison agenda. We need our politics to work for the citizens, not scrutinize each other, thats too personal.
Stone6, Close but no cigar dont work for me, because of how he'd get there...Money! Just because U have more money than the other guy does'nt mean U should win! Gingrich and Ron Paul "R" my beliefs, not Romney. He's a Mormon, I dont condon those beliefs.
Ah...so you oppose Romney because he's a rich Mormon, who is politically moderate? Whatever...it's a free country...vote for whoever you want. Personally, while I would not completely throw out those factors or personal histories, I'd also consider what they are promising for the future and compare those policies against the other choices.
David--sorry, but Ron Paul will only stand for your 'freedom' if you are not a poor female or a gay person.
RICH women have always been able to get abortions--it was just called a D and C for 'heavy cramps'. Because they could pay for it.
And gays account for between 10 and 20 % of our population, and even at the lower end of that, they are about the same percent as left handed people. And in the past, left handed people were ALSO considered to be undesirables--the Latin word for 'left' is SINISTER, and in the 50's, my parents were advised to "break" my brother of being left handed so he wouldn't have that 'handicap' against him. They did, and he's been a psychological MESS the rest of his life.
Gray, Finally you said something that makes sense. Our days R numbered if a Repug is elected....or Mr. Paul!!!!!!btw,I do agree with an earlier statement you made about abolishing the federal tax on fuel. And Mittens is one arrogant, only for the richest sob.
Obama/Biden 2012
As an American, I am disgusted with the corruption, the predatory lending practices of the banks, the Bought Congress with it's 7% approval rating, the unfair trade practices implemented with NAFTA (by the majority in both parties), the lack of jobs -- of which 1,500 Corps have exported jobs (see Exporting America list), the decrease in salaries in jobs remaining in this country because the jobs are so competitive to get (5 applicants for every one job), and the poor college students coming out of school with predatory loans and NO jobs and crappy wages. We The American People appear to be waking up. I hope it is fast enough. If I vote for Obama... it will only be because (as I have e-mailed him several times and stated).. he is the worst of all the evils out there. And I make sure he knows it! We The People need to put the pressure on Congress, Vote Them Out, and put people in office that care about this country, you, me, the future of our children and our nation, and get the modern day Robber Barons/money changes out of the system. Back Dylan Ratigan and Bernie Sanders. We need to get to the root of the corruption, the fact that money has been infecting every inch of our political process for over 25 years, and our own elected officials got Bought and removed consumer protections, and now they are pissed-off we are trying to put them back and forced Obama to make a recess appointment. I don't think Obama would have even done it hadn't the American people and many CAUSES and the Occupiers pushed him a bit. They are all infected with the Money Changers money, from Goldman Sachs to JP Morgan Stanley and I am proud to say, irregardless of party, I think most Americans are getting it! Ron Paul -- at least -- is more principle centered in his philosophy, and we all know pretty well where he stands. If he didn't have the racist and discriminatory past history - - he could pull this off. But, he won't run independently and/or as a Liberterian, because most Liberterians, (like myself), know the days of Liberterianism in this nation are gone... we have moved too far past that possibility and the system couldn't survive that transition back to that type of independent philosophy at this juncture in time. I am going Progressive -- not regressive.. but I am very concerned that anyone can do what is needed at this point in time. Obama needs to stand up and tell us what he will do... and not reneg... or it may be a President that is elected for the wrong reasons, and we will continue to be a country/nation/people in decline. We need to get the jobs back here, we need to tax fairly, address the unfair trade practices, and equalize the playing field/and reform the banking system. I'm with Dylan Ratigan... reform the system, need a constitutional amendment to "get the money out" and maybe a Constitutional Convention so the people can take back this nation and restore the system to a balanced system that our Founding fathers intended. We need to do whatever it takes, and remember. The two-party system is no longer balanced. It is owned by the money changers, and if you don't believe it.. go check out each member of Congress, and the Presidential contenders and you will see who is really funding their campaigns. It isn't We The People.... we are the peons. Wake Up America... the Occupiers are doing their job.. we need to do ours. Or leave our children in dispair. The 1% won't worry... they will leave their children plenty. Courtesy of exploiting us. If we let them
Why so much coverage of candidates that clearly aren't going to win? Every single straw poll has Dr. Paul CRUSHING every other candidate. Facebook, WND, ABCNews - even NBCNews. All these polls have Dr. Paul on top. Your consumer base is telling you that they don't support these bull@!$%# candidates, NBC. Stop spending money on trying to make Romney and Santorum seem genuine. They are terrible actors who aren't familiar with their own policies because they intend on taking marching orders from banks. I think we as a people have had enough of these strawman candidates
I think you are referring mostly to internet polls. Paul is a libertarian. I have no proof, but would suggest that libertarians are over-represented on the internet compared to the general population...hence, he usually does well.
Regarding national, scientific polling, while he generally falls in the top tier, I don't think he's consistently in the top spot.
Paul isn't going to be nominated by the Republican Party...maybe the Libertarian Party, if he decides to go that way. And, in that case - as he well knows - he'd only divide the Republican vote and hand the election to Obama. I think Paul has signficiant minority support within the Republican Party (maybe 30-35%), but because of what are perceived as radical positions (drugs, defense, etc), it is not an "expandable minority," which is what it will take to win the general election. You get the nomination from the base, but you run toward the middle...because that's, more or less, where you govern from. Remember, like it or not, the President represents ALL of us.
All but Huntsmen signed the Grover Norquist blood oath to never raise taxes. However, Huntsmen approves of the Paul Ryan plan to kill Medicare and Social Security, as we know it.
Dale--until you advocate a tax plan that requires EVERYONE to pay SOME taxes (even the very poor) in the form of a flat tax, I am totally against raising taxes on the group who is already paying MOST of the taxes.
When 50% of your electorate not only pays NO income tax, but also receives REFUNDS of money they never paid in, and benefits in the form of welfare, unemployment, food stamps, low income housing, WIC, etc, they will NEVER vote for someone who will balance the budget, much less pay down the deficit.
And believe me when I say I am FIRMLY in the 99%ers. The difference is, I didn't HAVE kids I couldn't afford, don't HAVE a home or car loan, and since I can no longer deduct my kids since I raised them to get out in the world and earn their own living, I pay 15% of MY income just to the feds.
On less than $50K a year.
A FAIR tax is one where EVERYONE contributes. ONLY if you pay IN do you realize the real COST of benefits. I don't WANT this country to become like Europe, going belly up because the pols 'wrote benefit packages' checks on a bank account with not enough money.
And I don't want my kids and grandkids to be saddled with debt that CURRENT government policies and hand outs committed them involuntarily to.
The USA will be fine, no matter what happens. We do however need to elect someone to fix the psychological problem that our country has been stuck in. Unfortunately, Ronald Reagan is not available this time. So, for the country, both parties need to make sure that Newt Gingrich is elected. He can run the country and provide the much needed positive reinforcement, which is the biggest issue we are facing. When that is fixed, everything else will fall into place. Four years ago, I gave President Obama a chance. I threw away my vote by writing in Al Gore/Mike Huckabee. But it just hasn't worked. I have no gripe with President Obama personally. He's a good man, but he wasn't able to mobilize the country. I am a liberally-conservative Reagan Republican. I vote for who is best for our country. The best choice for our country at this moment in time is Gingrich/Huntsman or Gingrich/Huckabee. Our country is the greatest country in the world. We need to remember that. Together we succeed, Democrats and Republicans, Liberals and Conservatives. There is no reason to act separate. We need to correct our path. It's that simple.
The world has changed since RR. You would have to separate his principles from his policies and adjust the latter to fit our times. Too many, who have done economically well with the status quo, have hijacked his principles to maintain antiquated policies.
In case you haven't noticed, that's largely how we got into the present mess.
My "theory" of American politics is that we tend to pursue a course of action until we overreach, which brings change back toward the opposite side. The modern "left" began with FDR and carried through to LBJ's overreach. The next era was Reagan's and that went on until GW's overreach. Now it's Obama's turn. He hasn't been perfect...but he's moved forward and deserves four more years to make his case.
Isn't it just like the liberal medai to give us four multiple choice answers, and all of them put words in our mouths -- especially if we choose "NO"?!? They couldn't get past their perpetual bias long enough to offer us a simple YES or NO choice without adding conditions and negative talking points!
And HERE is the real kicker! In this SINGLE opportunity to drill, trip-up and otherwise diminish GOP candidate Mitt Romney, the media has ALREADY been tougher on him than they have their messiah obama since 2008!!
For any of you college students out there who have chosen HYPOCRISY as the subject of your
doctoral dissertation or master's theses, look no further than the Fourth Estate (The Liberal Media) as your primary, if not ONLY, source!
Would you include conservative Talk Radio and Fox in the Fourth Estate? How are they NOT part of the Liberal Media Establishment, when by definition all media is liberal?
Why was the issue of the pension paid to senate and congress for life after only serving 4 years (if they are booted out early) with cost of living increase! This is a job perk that should go only pay for time in seat. Also Gingrich wa one of the Congress that voted for 30% wage increase for themselves during the recession in '80's so sad that was not brought up when he said how well he did at this time. 10/4! Good Buddy! Ron Paul for President, Gingrich for Vice President, or we R done!
a) Neither Gingrich or Paul are going to receive the nomination of the Republican Party.
Really? Ddn't you endorse Governor Perry?
3 More ways to improve our government: 1) Get rid of federal tax on fuel 2) Charity starts @ home, not throwing good money after bad 3) Stop playing superman to the world, check ourselves first, protect our borders from the thugs.
Should any incumbent be re-elected? see www.electionpledge.com
Personally, while I would not completely throw out those factors or personal histories, I'd also consider what they are promising for the future and compare those policies against the other choices.
what a BS poll. only an idiot liberal could come up with this crap
RON PAUL 2012- better than obama, and will stand for your freedom to answer nonsensical polls like this one. lol
We R screwed as a Nation, too many blissfull idiots, always the wrong people in high places. Our days R numbered, clock is ticking.
Why bother, you're editing out the ones you don't like?
Ask them will they raise taxes on the wealthy!!!
They should have "No, even if you held a gun to my head I still wouldn't vote for any of the republican candidates" as an option.
I don't want a theocracy or an oligarchy - that's all the gop appears to be offering.
