When he was assassinated - it broke so many of those men. My uncle ended up serving two tours of duty. He lost his mind over there. He came back here suffering PTSD and the military turned their back on him.

When he tried to sleep he would wake up screaming. Then he'd get his gun and spend the rest of the night going through the house from room to room - I guess he thought he was still on patrol. He tried drinking to make himself forget, when that didn't work he turned to drugs. When that didn't work he broke into the gun cabinet, got in his truck, drove a mile down the road, pulled into a field, and took his head off with a shotgun. He was 31 yrs. old.

My other uncle was exposed to agent orange. Not long after he came home he was diagnosed with leukemia. The military lied through their teeth, tried to say it didn't have anything to do with him getting sick - even though four other men he was over there with all developed the same sort of leukemia too. The military tried to get out of paying my aunt the compensation my uncle was owed. During my uncles last months of life on this earth, instead of being able to spend time with her dying husband, my aunt was on the phone screaming and cursing at them because they didn't want to pay a bloody cent. Sen. Ted Kennedy is the only reason my aunt received the compensation their family was owed.

Someone scrapping by to follow their dream shouldn't be legally forced to comply with installing very expensive elevators, ramps, and even levered door knobs. There are plenty of examples of older buildings that are flat out cost-prohibitive to comply, with the business owners only skirting by illegally until someone makes an issue out of it. This should be a business decision.

Odds are, with a different type of legislation, most major retailers and newly constructed businesses would comply anyway as a way to attract customers.

AP: Two totally different things. My point is that the ADA needs reform. A good law should protect rights without infringing upon the larger populace. For the most part, the ADA does plenty of good for a lot of people. But, the way the laws are written, anyone with passion and time can make life a living hell for business owners and public building operators everywhere - and not always for the better.

If you really wanted to, you could force a business to install a $20,000+ elevator for a small handful of disabled potential customers. You could force a public building (fire department, city hall, etc) to close if it is deemed unfit for compliance. I won't even get started on the dumb situations that come up trying to stay in compliance with ramps, parking spaces, etc.

As I said...it is overreaching and needs reform.
