Obama fights for Jewish support amid GOP attacks

President Barack Obama and his Republican opponents are clashing over U.S. policy toward Israel as each side jockeys for support from Jewish voters, who could be critical in the 2012 election.

Aiming to cast Obama as unfairly harsh toward Israel and soft on the Palestinians, Republican presidential hopefuls Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich have called on the president to fire his ambassador to Belgium. The envoy, Howard Gutman, had said that some anti-Semitism stemmed from tensions between Israel and the Palestinians; Romney and Gingrich say his remarks unfairly blamed Israel.

The White House says Obama has a strong record on support for Israel, and quickly fired back with a statement condemning "anti-Semitism in all its forms." The State Department said Gutman would remain in his job.

Republicans also challenged Obama's assertion at a fundraiser last week that "this administration has done more in terms of the security of the state of Israel than any previous administration." Romney said Obama has "repeatedly thrown Israel under the bus" — an accusation the Republican National Committee repeated Monday.

Firing back, Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz called Romney's comments "outrageous" and questioned his own policies. The White House cited military aid to Israel and support at the United Nations, and pointed to statements from Israeli officials backing up Obama's assertion.

The fiery debate will probably continue Wednesday when the GOP presidential candidates attend a Washington forum hosted by the Republican Jewish Coalition.

Obama campaign officials say they will be ready to respond. And the next day, Jewish leaders will be at the White House for briefings on Israel and a Hanukkah party, followed by an Obama speech next week to an expected audience of nearly 6,000 at a conference of the Union for Reform Judaism.

Such attention is all being paid in recognition that Jewish voters, though comprising only 2 percent of the electorate nationwide, are an important part of Obama's base and could make the difference in battleground states including Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Nevada in a close election. Moreover, the Jewish community is an important source of donations, and Obama campaign supporters want to maintain that support as much as Republicans want to chip away at it.

"This campaign takes the Jewish vote very, very seriously," said Ira Forman, the Obama campaign Jewish outreach director. "I'm confident this will be the most comprehensive effort in presidential campaign history."

The White House outreach has increased since May when Obama caused a furor by calling for Israel's 1967 borders, with agreed-upon land swaps, as a basis for resuming negotiations toward a two-state solution with the Palestinians. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the '67 borders as indefensible and largely disregarded Obama's emphasis on land swaps to account for current conditions.

Republicans seized on the dispute. And while Obama supporters say his argument was widely mischaracterized, damage was done. Now the Obama campaign and its backers say they are determined to respond rapidly to such criticism in future.

"We are trying to responsibly respond to all of these unsubstantiated or false allegations, but there are so many of them, and they are so frequently recited despite the fact that the people who are spreading them have to know that they're false, that it's hard to keep up with them," said Alan Solow, an Obama fundraiser and longtime associate.

The effort involves using surrogates including Vice President Joe Biden, and use of the president's own time in public appearances and private talks with donors and religious leaders, such as a conference call between Obama and rabbis ahead of the Jewish New Year this fall.

The Obama campaign also is going on the offense against Republicans. In conversations about the Jewish vote, Obama backers are quick to bring up comments by Romney, Gingrich and Rick Perry at a debate last month suggesting they would start foreign aid for all countries at zero. Obama supporters say would imperil funding for Israel, even though the candidates also sought to affirm their support for the Jewish state.

Democratic candidates typically enjoy a big electoral advantage among Jewish voters. Obama won 78 percent of the Jewish vote in 2008, compared with 21 percent for Republican John McCain.

But Gallup has found that Obama's approval rating among Jews has fallen from 83 percent in January 2009 to 54 percent in late summer and early fall of this year. Still, that figure is much higher than his overall 41 percent approval rating, and the drop-off in support was about in line with other voter groups.

Sid Dinerstein, chairman of the Palm Beach County Republican Party in Florida, predicted that Obama would be limited to around 60 percent of the Jewish vote in 2012. Obama backers say that won't happen, but it could mean a potentially decisive difference of tens of thousands of votes in key states.

A candidate's position on Israel may not be the top issue for most Jewish voters, who like others are more motivated by jobs and the economy. But it's important to many, and Republicans see an opening, given the consternation over Obama's 1967 borders speech, his administration's rebukes of Israel for building settlements in disputed areas, and a recent incident in which Obama was overheard appearing to endorse criticism of Netanyahu from French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

"The reality is that the Jewish community understands that on a number of critical issues this administration has undermined not only the U.S.-Israel relationship, but has made Israel more vulnerable," said Matt Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition.

Brooks points to the recent upset in New York's special election to replace Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner, in which Republican Bob Turner won in the heavily Jewish district. Brooks says this was a warning sign to Obama on his stance on Israel. Obama supporters say other factors were at play, including the heavily Orthodox and more conservative makeup of the district.

But even strong supporters are disappointed that Obama has not yet traveled to Israel in his capacity as president, after delivering a major speech in Cairo early in his administration. An Israel trip had been rumored to be in the works but seems unlikely to happen prior to the 2012 election.

Democratic Rep. Steve Rothman of New Jersey said he remains hopeful a trip will happen in the next year.

"No president has been perfect on every subject, though history will record that Obama has been the best president for Israel when it comes to military and intelligence support," said Rothman.

No self-respecting Jew will support this non-ethical abomination. Do you think the Jews forget how quickly you abandoned Israel and your statements about its leaders?

I hope the Jews remember Obama's 2008 campaign. There were reasons then to suspect that he was less than supportive of them and of Isreal. When he realized that the Jews weren't warming up to him, he made the same campaign push to garner their support. Look at what's happened since.

Lets not forget that there are large numbers of us out here in America who have little use for Israel. It is just one big money pit of racism and fear mongering that we can do without. They are the source of a large number of the world's problems and as long as they have blind support from the US they have no reason to come to their senses.

Amused int he Midwest,

I don't think Israel is to blame for the world's problem as you state. That is a reach! I believe what the U.N. did years ago was a mistake. It should have been an all or nothing decision regarding creating independent states with the stroke of their pen. Since Palestine wasn't willing at the time they should have gone back to the drawing board rather than setting Israel up for failure without an extreme amount of Western military and financial support. But as they say "hined site is 20/20!" Going forward we need to support what we created and keep reaching for a fair solution with the Palestinians. President Obama is doing that. 2% of the U.S. population is not going to sway our politics one way or another. The very large black, and even larger hispanic populations will.

This is too funny - Obama tells Congress - "You guys stay in Washington DC and keep working on the Budget, and I'll see you in three weeks. If you come up with anything, I'll send Air Force One (at $500,000 per hour) to pick it up and bring it to me".

His idea of being 'Hands On' is to get a better grip on his golf clubs.

My only conclusion is that the Jewish folks voting for Obama are ignorant to his policies and beliefs. Brings to mind the welfare lifers who think Obama is going to pay their house bills and keep their cars full of gas.

Please, open your eyes and think about what Obama has done for you while he boards Air Force 1 and heads to yet another vacation. I predict that the Obama family will be hard pressed to go any where in the world safely once America figures out what he is really about.

I want the US president to support us here in at home in America. What's the point of sending billions of dollars each year to Israel as "foreign aid"? Does that create any jobs here? Does it make us safer? Does it help any family struggling to pay their mortgages?

      Marc,

If you look at ther aid Israel receives you will see that most of it has to be spent in the United States on military equipment so yes it does create jobs in this country and yes it does make us safer as they are on the front line against Iran. Look up the mysterious bombings in Iran over the last few weeks and the assisinations over the last few years and think where they could be coming from

Peeved off Iranians? You give to much credit to Israel. Israel receives 1/5 of all US aid to any country. We send them about 8.5 million dollars a day. On average we give them $500 for each and every Israeli every year. Unlike any other country that we give military aid to, Israel is allowed to spend 25% of that aid buying from their own contractors. They are the only country that we allow to do this and as a result they have a large military industrial complex just like we do. Conflict is in their financial interest. Take a look at this for more info.

However, if Israel were to fall the middle east would be a united front with the Muslim Brotherhood in the driver's seat. If you don't believe that this situation would affect American citizens, I believe you're wrong. The Commander-In- Chief is also charged with the responsibility of PROTECTING our citizens and interests in the world. Oh, he's also really failed at that as well. They conduct industrial espionage against us just like the Chinese do. Israel is not a bunch of innocents that are picked on. They are a very sophisticated bully who uses the religious feelings of millions of Americans who have misinterpreted the Bible to get us to do things that are really not in our interests at all.

@ Roscoe - He never said it. It's an intentionally misleading lie! Read the book for yourself. He said, "Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific assurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.

The ugly direction is interment camps again for American citizens based on race or religous views. Reading is fundamental. it's nothing without comprehension.

Listen people. We are divided and no one wants to help the current President fix our Nation. American people need JOBS to support their families. i.e. a living WAGE not minimum wage.

Its not the small business owners that can provide this stability. The Republicans focus on this small group of business owners to promote the slogan " Jobs Killing Bill" whenever our President talks of creating JOBs.

We need to bring back manufactoring Jobs to ensure our survival as a nation. Our children will not be able to support themselves in the future if we as Adults are not able to survive/suppport them on Service related JOBS today.

Our elected officials have allowed many of these high paying manufacturing jobs to relocate to foreign countries for profit. Even as we speak many of our Service related jobs i.e. customer support and call centers have been outsourced. PROFIT — PROFIT — PROFIT. Its all about MONEY. Thats The TRUTH. We need to STOP brickering about the small stuff and FOCUS on the real issues and thats JOBS and EDUCATION. I'm not talking about COLLEGE our future leaders are in K-12.

Taxes are a necessary evil. We all should bear the burdon. If the federal government does not raise taxes your local governemtn will. They need to raise revenue. The rich should pay more taxes. Its document that they dont pay their fair share.

Its simple Supply and Demand. Demand is down because there are no JOBS. If consurmers spending is down the economy will suffer. CREATE JOBS and Job security and we will spend spend spend. We are the consumers of the world.

Obama has caused more instability in the middle east, and has damaged our relationship with Israel through his comments and actions. He has exhibited a total lack of leadership in exerting our influence for democracy and freedom in these de-stabilized countries, including Libya, Iran, Turkey, etc. What is our goal in the region? I would hope it is this: Take care of our alliances and friends, defend against enemies, and stand to influence our enemies to move toward democracy and peaceful trade. How has Obama shown that any of this is his goal? In fact I believe his goals are exactly the opposite. I have to comment to Just Because. Your comments are off subject, but being a small business owner I have to respond. Businesses move as demand and costs of doing business dictate. You suggest that elected officials have the mandate and power to "prevent" businesses from going over seas. In a free capitalist society businesses supply jobs by making their own decisions to maximize profits, and every time the government limits, controlls or manipulates the markets it costs businesses $ and therefore jobs. Get out of your government pushed stroller; it's time to grow up.

Jeff thanks for the reminder about this administration and its position on Isreal. I saw the comment on small business and couldn't help but respond. For anyone to say nothing has changed is what is disingenious. Our government is out of control. Small business drives this economy and always has.

Oh, and BTW, yes, I do run my own small business. Perhaps is the GOP started a few less unnecessary wars which have nearly bankrupted the country, we could give you a tax cut.

And lastly, what is with this incessant nonsense from the Right that somehow you are the only people who work??? I was unaware that Right Wing zealots had a monopoly on having a job.

          Ozzie Boy,

Who started the war in Libya, costing about $1 billion, and did so without Congressional approval ..... in direct contradiction to his statement that no President should enter the U.S. into a war, where our national security was not at risk, WITHOUT getting congressional approval ? Who said that Ozzie boy ??

As far as being taxed to death, the company I work for pays a little over 40% in federal and state corporate income taxes. Then ther's this ridiculous thing called the FTC Red Flags Rule, which is 99% inapplicable, but we are required to comply. How about the EPA telling us how to run a certain facet of our business that is miniscule and pretty much irrelevant to the big picture ??

          Just Because,

You stated "Listen people. We are divided and no one wants to help the current President fix our Nation. American people need JOBS to support their families. i.e. a living WAGE not minimum wage."

Just Because, what gives you the opinion Obama really wants to fix the Nation. You will find that his idea of fixing the nation may cause you pain beyond your wildest dreams.

"We need to bring back manufactoring Jobs to ensure our survival as a nation. Our children will not be able to support themselves in the future if we as Adults are not able to survive/suppport them on Service related JOBS today."

You might want to call Obama and ask him why his job Czar has moved thousands of GE jobs to China. Oh, and by the way, also ask him why his buddy and GE did not pay $1 in taxes last year.

          You support Obama why?

"Taxes are a necessary evil. We all should bear the burdon. If the federal government does not raise taxes your local governemtn will. They need to raise revenue. The rich should pay more taxes. Its document that they dont pay their fair share."

Just Because, you are correct, taxes are necessary but not to bring all people to the same level of living. I don't want to surprise you, but the rich do pay more taxes. Duh. What I want you to provide is evidence of documentation that the rich don't pay their fair share. Oh, by the way, Obama has made a lot of money selling books written by others. Has he sent you any of the funds from the book sales?

Enough of this as I am getting sick of the uneducated, unemployed, free-loaders looking for somebody to take care of them. By the way Just Because, try to proof read and use check spell.

Are you Jewish? I'm gonna make an assumption that your not. So you know not whereof you speak. Almost every Jew I know and that would include me, support Obama and don't buy into this "Obama hates Israel" crap. I support Israel but I'm an American first and a supporter of Israel second. Nor do I automatically approve of everything Israel does. Do you think Israeli's are any different from Americans in the sense that there are many varied opionions about politcs??? You make is sound as though all Israels march in lock step with Netanyahu. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Obama received 74% of the Jewish vote last time around. I can assure you he will receive close to that again. Sorry to disappoint.

          Ozzie-Boy:

As a Jew, I'm not going to tell you what your voting priorities should be. Obviously that's up to you. An American citizen should be contemplating foremost issues that correspond with American interests (although I'd argue that standing up for Israel is very much within America's best interests).

However, if you do not believe that Obama is one of the most ideologically anti-Israel American Presidents ever, then you are completely delusional. His comments about pre-67 borders were deliberate. He dislikes Netanyahu to the core (which is obvious). You may disagree with Netanyahu's policies, but he is a staunch fighter for Israel's survival and security, which is possibly the biggest reason why Obama can't get along with him. Obama wants him to just give up everything to the Palestinians so he can look good on the world stage.

If it were up to Obama, he'd force Israel to hand over all territories captured in the 1967 war to the Palestinians, and then go to Cairo and bask in glory.

You are wrong! Obama's support from Jews, AS OF TODAY, is down to 54% and continuing TO FALL. Maybe being rude to the Israeli prime minister, catering to Israel's enemies, being pro-Arab Spring, and telling Israel they need to move their borders back to the pre-1967 borders is having an effect, huh? Either way, his support among Jews has fallen rapidly, and continues to do so...

We are at a time in our history that we need a person who is mature and has a high understanding of what is happening domestically and internationally. Someone who is high up on the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs.

This statement is a rewording of a passage from page 261 of The Audacity of Hope, in which Barack Obama spoke of the importance of not allowing inflamed public opinion to result in innocent members of immigrant groups being stripped of their rights, denied their due as American citizens, or placed into confinement, as was done with Japanese-Americans during World War II.

The original contains no specific mention of "Muslims".

"In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

How can the Jewish community expect the rest of the world to take them seriously when they run around the planet calling non-Jews "Goyim" (sheep or cattle) and pretend that their invisible god made them our "shepherds". Actually Nickster, "Goyim" is Hebrew for "nations." "Goy" is the singular "nation". In the Old Testament, non-Jews are referred to as "Goyim", the other nations of the world, to distinguish them from the Jewish nation. The translation of "Goyim" as sheep or cattle is a new one on me.

I also want to add that too much is being made of this. The Jewish population in the U.S. is approaching miniscule proportions as to be barely influential in anything that goes on in the U.S. I won't vote for Obama again because I think he lacks the skills of negotiation and compromise that are so necessary when dealing with a fractured Congress.

The writers are deliberately being inflammatory, and you know what? By the comments showing up here, it's working!

This president has no shame. He won't take the blame for any of his actions. He also insults Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he visited the president earlier in the year by not inviting him to a dinner at the White House which is usually proper protocal to visiting dignitaries.

Obama began showing his true allegiance with his Cairo speech. His first major address in office. The fact that a POTUS would make his first major address from Cairo was astounding enough but the content of the speech and all he has done since should have been a clear warning to jews everywhere. He believes that Israel can do nothing for him so as a result he has very little interest in one of our staunchest allies.

Not only has he failed to get the Islamic world behind him he's managed the Daily Double by alienating Israel to boot.

Land swap has always been at the core of the US approach to the peace process. The problem is neither side will agree on any detail when it comes to the swaps.

                  This is a non-troversy, just a never-ending argument between the 2 sides.

Ozzie cant grasp that Jewish support for Obama in America has fallen from 73% to 54%, as of today, and the fall continues, yet we still have to hear his false crap about Obama definitely winning the majority of the Jewish vote. FAIL.

Land swap has been at the core of US/UN Policy since 11/22/67.

Well I got to ask what's wrong with there being a Palistinian state and giving people the same chance to live and prosper on GOD'S earth as the Isareli's have??!! That's what is the issue for any President that's going to come into office!!! Just because he asked the Isareli Prime Minister to give the people of Palistine a chance to grow and prosper along with you and he said no (the Isareli Prime Minister) doesn't mean he hasn't gotten the same aid as he did before. It also doesn't mean the President is throwing Israel under the bus. To me it means he's in a quandry of giving Isarel everything they want and letting them destroy a nation of people or getting thrown under the bus because he's not giving them a full all out support to help them destroy and depress the people of Palistine. At least that's the way I've seen it over these last 25 years that I been keeping up with full politics. Anybody who questions Israel's motives on how they try to strong arm another race of people and take over as much land as possible for there own selfish reasons is considered againist Israel. No!!! It just means GOD made all people equal and that everybody deserves a chance to prosper on his earth. That's my opinion.

Jeff: You are nuttier than a fruit cake!!! Israel has no problem with the creation of a state of Paletine ... just denounce the total destruction of Israel, agree to allow Israel to be the Jewish state, don't force the return of the Palestinian refugees onto the state of Israel, and agree to live in peace within the negotiated (between Israel and the Palestinian Authority) borders. Also have the terrorist group in Gaza agree to these terms ....

And if Iran try's anything that the President receives the actual intelligence that they are out to attack Israel you best believe that Iran would get it three times worse then whatever George Bush or any other President of the United States would put on them. That's one thing I do know about this President, once he finds out from the intelligence community that he needs to handle something he responds with full force.

You are talking about our bungler in chief right? If Iran was stupid enough to attack Israel Odumbo would probably blame Israel for starting it and not do a thing as any other self respecting Jew hating muslim would do.

Ugh, you want to take care of Israel, fix the economy in America so that the people who want to loan them money can do so on their own accord.
