GOP rivals hope to court Cain supporters

A day after Herman Cain shuttered his Republican candidacy for president, struggling GOP hopefuls looked to pick up the fallen candidate's tea party following and upset a primary dynamic that has pushed Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich to the forefront.

Reps. Ron Paul of Texas and Michele Bachmann of Minnesota said Sunday they expected Cain supporters would fall in line behind them because of their messages on limited government, despite their low standing in the polls. Meanwhile, last-place rival Rick Santorum predicted he now had a good chance of winning the Iowa caucus.

Republican presidential candidates (L-R) former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, U.S. Representative Ron Paul, Texas Governor Rick Perry, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, businessman Herman Cain, former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, U.S. Representative Michele Bachmann, and former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman stand at attentiond during the singing of the national anthem during the CNN GOP National Security debate in Washington, November 22, 2011.

While such brazen predictions are likely overstated, the 11th-hour press comes at a crucial time and could upset an already volatile race for the GOP endorsement. A month before the first vote is cast in the Iowa caucus and five weeks before the New Hampshire primary, most GOP candidates were looking to a week of heavy campaigning in Iowa ahead of the next debate, scheduled for Saturday. The stakes are possibly the highest for Mitt Romney, who could be hurt the worst if Cain supporters rally behind Gingrich.

"A lot of Herman Cain supporters have been calling our office and they've been coming over to our side," said Bachmann. "They saw Herman Cain as an outsider and I think they see that my voice would be the one that would be most reflective of his."

Likewise, Paul said he was optimistic that Cain's departure would reinvigorate his campaign.

"We're paying a lot of attention to that, because obviously they're going to go somewhere in the next week or so," Paul said of Cain's supporters.

Santorum predicted that his campaign would pick up steam in coming days.

Recommended: Reid set to offer compromise to extend tax cut

"We have a very strong, consistent conservative message that matches up better with Iowans than anybody else. And we think we're going to surprise a lot of people," he said.

Once surging in the polls, Cain dropped out of the race Saturday after battling allegations of sexual harassment and a claim that he had a 13-year extramarital affair. The Georgia businessman has denied the accusations.

Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker from Georgia, has so far been the biggest beneficiary of Cain's slide. A Des Moines Register poll conducted Nov. 27-30 and released late Saturday found the former House speaker leading the GOP field with 25 percent support, ahead of Paul at 18 percent and Romney at 16.

A separate NBC News/Marist poll showed Gingrich beating Romney, 26 percent to 18 percent, among Republican caucus attendees in Iowa.

Gingrich also is enjoying national popularity that could give him the momentum he needs to overcome deficiencies in the organization of his campaign. At the same time, Gingrich says he knows his surge in the polls could disappear if his opponents stage a comeback.

"I'm not going to say that any of my friends can't suddenly surprise us," Gingrich said at a recent town hall meeting in New York sponsored by tea party supporters.

Meanwhile, Romney is running strong in New Hampshire, which holds the nation's first primary on Jan. 10. Romney is also seen by most conservatives at this point as having the greatest chance of defeating President Barack Obama next year.

But Romney continues to be viewed with suspicion by many conservatives who say he has changed his stance on such critical issues as abortion and health care. Santorum acknowledged Sunday that Romney has embraced more conservative positions on issues.

"The question is, you know, what's the sincerity of the move and whether he can be trusted," said Santorum.

Bachmann said it was too soon to declare anyone a true front-runner because the dynamic in the race was constantly changing.

"We've got 30 days," she said. "That's an eternity in this race."

Reince Priebus, the Republican Party chairman, said Sunday that he was indifferent to Cain's departure and that it was "only natural" in the face of falling poll numbers and trouble raising money.

This week's agenda for the primary candidates included a stop in Arizona by Romney and a forum Wednesday by the Republican Jewish Coalition in Washington, which is expected to attract Bachmann, Gingrich, Huntsman, Perry, Romney and Santorum. Gingrich was scheduled to meet Monday with real-estate mogul Donald Trump at Trump's New York offices. Trump, who briefly entered the primary race in the spring and drew considerable publicity when he questioned the validity of Obama's birth certificate, said he would moderate a Republican presidential debate in Iowa on Dec. 27.

Paul, who has clashed publicly with Trump, said he thought the GOP was making a mistake in giving Trump so much credibility.

"I don't understand the marching to his office. I mean I didn't know that he had an ability to lay on hands, you know, and anoint people," Paul said.

Paul and Bachmann spoke on CNN's "State of the Union." Santorum spoke on ABC's "This Week." Priebus spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Well as governor of MA. he was pro-choice and mandated healthcare because that's what the citizens of MA. wanted. The state's rights people should love him for this but the state's rights people are also die-hard pro-gun, pro-life and anti-gay.

Being from MA. isn't easy.

He has the ability to lay hands on women and turn them into something not very flattering, and nothing else. What an embarrassment to get this moron's endorsement.

His suppporters better ask for a refund. He is a con man, as well as a womanizer.

It's in the best interests of the media misers to go on pretending, exaggerating, exploiting.

Whoever is the candidate (as long as it's either Paul, Gingrich or Cain) will become president.

Why would anyone even want the Pepperoni Pizza Boys endorsement sounds like they would be better off without it. (sure likes those white women) can't wait for the divorce.

Anyway Gingrich is a sure loser in the general election this politician scumbag has so much baggage it would sink a ship mainly his. It would be like shooting fish in a barrel to bring this slime ball down.

So who does that leave Romney and the right wing nut jobs don't like him (he's not crazy enough) so looks like Obama in 2012

Why would anyone want his endorsement ? His words resonate with the not-too-bright and guillible, so his endorsement would swing quit a few of his followers to whoever he endorses.

Hence the "suspended" ( As opposed to dropping out ) campaign while he tries to hawk his sway for future favor.

This is more a legal move. If he "drops out" or closes his campaign, he cannot continue to raise money to pay off campaign debt. By suspending his campaign, he can still raise funds, pay off bills, then close his campaign. Hillary Clinton's 2008 campaign is still "suspended". She has not "dropped out" or closed the campaign.

From the OWS website:

OWS Tells Newt Gingrich to "Take a Bath"

Posted 5 minutes ago on Dec. 5, 2011, 12:39 a.m. EST by OccupyWallSt

Newt Gingrich told Occupy Wall Street protesters to "go get a job, right after you take a bath." Funny coming from a filthy rich politician who is rolling in dirty money. Since leaving the House of Representatives over a decade ago in a cloud of ethics violations, Newt has amassed a fortune of between $7.3 million and $31 million by the peddling of political influence. He has been personally paid $840,000 by the Chamber of Commerce, more than $1.6 million from Freddie Mac, and $575,000 from Growth Energy, an ethanol lobby. His for-profit "think tank", the Center for Health Transformation, was founded to lobby on behalf of health insurance and pharmaceutical corporations, such as Wellpoint and Pfizer. His 527 group, American Solutions for Winning the Future, was funded by big oil and coal companies and worked to oppose climate change legislation and promote offshore drilling. Newt peddles political influence and corrupts our democracy so he can maintain his $500,000 account at Tiffany's. Filthy.

On Monday, Newt is in town to raise money from the 1%. OWS will be there to greet him.

The circus.....goes on and on and on. And the guy who is twice divorced and had an extra-marital affair with his current wife hopes to gain the most from this. AMAZING!! More than ever, as I look at the sorry set of Republican “rivals” on the other side, I am THANKFUL to have Barack Obama as President, and as a viable candidate for re-election. Mr. Obama: your heart, your values, and your basic decency are all in the right place. BUT...your hands are tied. Unfortunately they were tied by us, the electorate.....when we failed to provide you with a Congress that you can work with. Instead, you are saddled with a don’t-tax-the-1%-do-nothing Congress that battles you at every turn, while the people suffer. God, they don't EVEN let you pass your own appointments. It's not Tea-publican gridlock -it's Tea-publican sabotage. Heck, it's Tea-publican treason....while the 99% BLEEDS. And then they try to pin the blame on Mr. Obama. These people have no shame...or else its been purchased by those who can afford to do so. In her last years, Grandma gets her meager Social Security check, and they DARE to call it “socialism”. Give me a break! (and Grandma too!) Thankfully, with Occupy Wall Street, America has found its voice: a voice that reminds us that people -ordinary down-to-earth working people- really DO matter. Not “corporations are people -people” , but REAL people! Tea-publicans want even MORE 1%-tax-break-corporate-loopholes....while these “job-creators” send our jobs overseas, and wish that we’d go away too.... as they buy every politician in sight. And if these politicians don’t have ENOUGH mistresses, I can hook them up with a few gorgeous -and rich!- oil companies. It would be a perfect blind date, except for the fact that they’re ALREADY in bed with them :-). But instead of talking about LESS government, and LESS taxes on the 1%, and MORE corporate welfare, and MORE painful cuts to those who can LEAST afford it....Occupy is a voice that demands a government that WORKS, a government that works FOR ALL OF US, not just for a favored few....not just for the rich. It’s a voice that comes up from the grassroots, and lifts us up in turn: because it insists that this land IS our land...and that we WANT IT BACK! It's a voice that will help us re-elect the President AND give him a more progressive people-oriented Congress to work with. Mr. Obama: I wish you well.... because you STILL give us hope!

Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich would sell their own mothers into prostitution if it meant winning the nomination. They have no morals! It pains me to see so many Americans being led around by the Mega media, being told who to vote for! It is very easy to see which of the candidates has morals, conviction, and the humble knowledge to guide us back to prosperity. Ron Paul stands alone. And for all the "He's too extreme" type people out there, I have a question for you. Was Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, John Adams, or James Madison too extreme? Because Ron Paul is more like them than is any candidate running! Maybe people have just become too attached to the free "easy" money being provided by unsustainable government programs and the protectionism provided by the cronysism existing in the U.S. today. If getting back to the intention of the constitution and the ideals of the founders is too extreme, then what is considered "normal?" Socialism? Communism? Hmmmmm?

You are absolutely right in that Newt knows the Washington game and has played it deftly and enriched himself very well in the process. If he ever becomes the President, he will not be looking out for conservatives like you, rather he would be looking for guys like Charlie Koch, John Paulson, Stephen Schwartzman and those rich folks who are currently on Mitt Romney's side and soon be backing Newt. Trust me, for Newt his conservative philosophy is a means to an end, that is to enrich himself and ensures his third wife can happily shop in Tiffany's for ever.

      @watt75:

Exactly how did Obama divide this country? I want to know since you accused him of it! And why shouldn't he apologize for America's arrogance? The gov't of Myanmar would not allow the U.S. to aid them even after their country had been ravished by natural disaster! America, Bush at least, lied so he could invade Iraq. Bush is a stupid son-of-a-bitch! This country ended up being involved in two wars simultaneously, that we simply could not afford! Did it ever occur to you that NOBODY threw shoes at Obama? Pres. Obama is restoring the once great name of America in the middle-east. Any fool can shoot and blow up innocent people. It takes a great mind to negotiate for what you want without going to war over the least little thing. But wait; what crime did Iraq commit against the U.S.; and don't say 911 because Osama bin-Laden took credit for that and Obama got him, or didn't you notice.? Gadhafi and Al Awlaki are gone as well.

You hate Obama because he is black but you don't have the balls to admit it. The CBO released a report about a week ago which states that the economy is on the rise and the last quarter even showed job growth of 1.4-milllion jobs. If Congress would get off their ass; Obama could turn this economy around. That's why they're fighting him so hard because just like you, they are all a bunch of racist! They know his plan would work and that's why they are trying to sit on it until after the 2012 general election. They will implement his plan but they want some white man to get credit for it. Obama got the health care bill passed when ALL others before him could not get it done and if a white man would have gotten done nobody would have put him down. Rip-off Romney did it in his state when he was governor and I didn't hear a peep from anyone! Obama is hardly weak, he's is the coolest president this nation has ever had and he TOOK OUT the right threats to America. Saddam Hussein was hung for nothing; for being a dictator in a region where dictators have always reigned. It was none of America's business at all. How would you like it if a foreign gov't came to America, these shores, and picked our new president for us? Some of you in here yack and talk crap and have the understanding of a four year-old! Well let me tell ya buddy; your smack doesn't pass the litmus test when it gets to me because you are a liar and a racist and that is all you are!

JC, great post! I agree with almost everything you said. Except the presumption of racist intentions. It's impossible to be sure but I don't think racism is the motivation for all of the opposition - some, yes, but not all. And that's because a lot of the opposition just hates Obama's generally progressive or at least anti-conservative views on so many things, abortion, gay rights, social policies like safety nets for the poor, etc. And he's not chanting the anti-tax mantra. A sizeable fraction of the ignorant GOP base willfully denies solid scientific evidence when it contradicts conservative belief (think evolution, pollution, or global warming).

It's not just racism: Why won't Obama won't pretend that down is up or less is more, like the dimwits and unschooled rightwing fringe nuts expect their leaders to do?

      Two Americas -

In the 2008 election, of the 21 states with the highest per capita income, 19 of them voted democrat.

Of the 20 states with the highest percentage of residents with with a bachelors degree or higher, 18 of them voted democrat.

Of the 28 states with the highest average teachers salary, 25 of them voted democrat.

Of the 28 least obese states, 23 of them voted democrat.

We do live in a divided country, it is divided in terms of personal responsibility, the valuation of education and the valuation you have in your own well being.

All of this can be verified by checking the census bureau state by state statistical abstract. The obesity numbers come form the American Heart Association. All of the numbers above were for 2007 or 2008 depending on the source.

      We are divided.

Twas the week before Christmas and all through the RIGHT

They were licking their wounds from their own ugly fight

Herman was gone and with that they were fine

They wouldn't have to listen to that old "999"

Newty was happy,He was leading the race

Regardless of his baggage and marital disgrace

Mitt was a panic ! This just can not be

Why in the HECK does no one like me..

Huntsman was stuck,in last place with care

In hopes that his money would take him somewhere

When all of the sudden, there arose such a clatter

Ron Paul had awakened to empty his bladder

A shouting Santorum said,"not on my shoe !!"

"My whole damn campaign has gone that way too !"

While Mitty was fipping and flopping through hoops

Rick Perry was dropping,Because of his OOOPS !!

Michelle was in trouble, her campaign it seemed through..

But she kept her eyes open, (she used super glue)

and while SANTA was flying away with his elves

He yelled, "YOU ARE ALL SCREWED....OBAMA IN "12" !!!

          Merry Christmas !!!

It's either Road kill or dumpster diving...The Republican Menu is intended for the middle class and the poor.

They serve KING GROVER, KOCH Bros, The Rich.

It is the GOP'S version of ROBIN HOOD.

The correct term is Dooh Nibor (reverse Robin Hood) , steal from the poor to give to the rich... why in bloody hell the middle-class and poor GOP supporters can't see that is beyond me.

It doesn't matter who the GOP nominee is, Obama will stay on for four more years. The Republican party has imploded on itself and looks mortally wounded to me (I hope this is the case). This wicked party needs to go away. What a tragedy they have bestowed on our beautiful country. Their insanity has been allowed to run rampant for decades, now look what we have- a broken economy, record deficits, wars that have outlasted any other in our history, the debt ceiling debacle, etc.. These people have put our country in imminent danger because of some fairy tale they call religion. Their hypocrisy can be seen everywhere, everyday. I hope I live long enough to see the GOP put to bed once and for all. They have been a nightmare.

I disagree. While the vast majority of candidates are either nutcases or scheming villains, I think Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman are both quite capable of getting the job done. Give them a shot if either of them gets the nomination, otherwise vote for Obama.

Jon Huntsman is the only Republican I would vote for and that is because he isn't a tea slagger.

retrostar ... couldn't agree with your comments more, but unfortunately, the face of politics has changed in recent years. Politics is going to the highest bidders now ... sad, but true. The likes of the Koch Bros, ect are impacting our government, even if Democrats win full control of Capital Hill again. Money influences policy, and these guys will give to the Democrats to influence favorable policy on the hill. Our Government is corrupt, from the top all the way down to the bottom. That's why you're seeing some Senators & Congressmen pack it in ... the corruption runs too deep and has stalemated solutions on the hill. All federal government politicians need to be stripped of their entitlements, given term limits, and tossed into the cesspool they've created for everyone else ... then things will start getting done ... won't happen though ... the fox guards the hen house.

I wouldn't trust Romney with a bag of dying maggots. Then again, I don't trust any mormon. I remember a few years ago, the former coach of the Utah Jazz jerry sloan's wife died and within a year he was re-married. Did he her waiting in the wings? Are there any morman widowers?

And how does this have anything to do with policy?

There is WAY TOO MUCH baggage on Newt. Do you know how many HOURS of video there is with him talking? There is even a segment where he advocates the exact healthcare plan as Obamacare.. You know, the MANDATE, that the neocons NOW seem to hate! (The mandate was a Republican idea, back when the Clintons were pushing reform.) No, there are TOO MANY video clips of Gingrich. The Dems have a ton of them on file and DON'T want the other GOP candidates to start using them....yet.

LOL ... and the vultures jump to the fresh kill ... lol!

Let's get a couple things straight here before the memories of Cain vanish into the sunset, and the Repubs wet themselves with asperations of increasing their lot in the Republican Barnum & Bailey circus lot here ...

When Cain was saying 9-9-9, he wasn't referring to the numbers, he was saying "nein, nein, nein" which is German for NO-NO-NO ... pretty typical talk for a Republican. So, Cain was maybe misunderstood. (yeah right). And he can lie to the press all he wants, but his wife was PISSED ... and I mean PISSED OFF!

Second, take ALL the voters that were for Cain, put them in 2 piles ... black, and Obama haters ... I can guarantee that most blacks are NOT going to vote for ANY of those remaining bozos for President. So, Obama probably stands to gain more than anyone from Cain pulling out, as he should ... shouldn't have gotten in, in the first place. There's NO ONE on the Republican ticket that gives a crushed cracker about blacks or Mexicans ... except to get their votes. A vote for anyone of them by minorities would hurt minorities ... loss of more jobs, pay, entitlements, ... you name it. So, the Republicans got NOTHING out of this, and rightfully so.

It is my good guess that the only other person that is happier thn Gloria Allred about "The Death Of Cains Train"...it's Michelle Bachmann

Bachmann is counting on the Poll-Fairy to turn her 3% single digit number into 999%
