Sen. Manchin: Automatic cuts to debt 'isn't governing'

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W. Va., joins Morning Joe to discuss the debt super committee and their seeming inability to reach a deal, and why he believes the president should step forward on the deficit talks.

Nice thought Senator Manchin.

Maybe you are a day late and a dollar short on that one.

I agree this committee just deflects the responsibility away from the whole congress and Obama. It creates a layer of responsibility above and seperate from them. This deflects the blame.

No one expected them to actually get anything done. This is smoke and mirrors at it's finest. Re-election time coming. That's all that matters.

Never heard of Senator Manchin before. I'll tell him though that it's NO WAY to run Congress ambushing votes by signing the Norquist pledge. So before he shoots off his mealy mouth he needs to take a look at his own area of responsibility.

BUT the Super Committe is what Congress wanted during the Debit Ceiling fiasco. Raising the debit ceiling has been a normal function for decades. If Tea Party Republicans did not hijack the senate and House, the "Super Committee" would not exist and this would be ONE LESS thing we need to worry about

The irony is you say that as if it's okay, like continually increasing our debt is an acceptable thing. While the TP is vilified for causing the debt crisis this summer, and rightly so, at least we got SOME reductions out of it, even if they are these almost random, across-the-board cuts. What would the alternative be? No meaningful reductions at all. It's too bad the GOP didn't go for that "grand deal" or whatever it was called, but they didn't so this is what we get. (Everyone knew the Super Committee wasn't going to work.)

So I guess I'm saying the TP is the cause of these reductions by rejecting earlier compromises which led to the current default cuts. Without them, I suspect we wouldn't be getting any cuts at all. A mixed blessing.

Agreed! The automatic cuts are better than no cuts at all! Some of these politicians just can seem to compromise their ideology even a little.

I am glad they failed. At least this will trigger some progress. If the POTUS had any cahones he would veto any attempts to undo the sequestering.

First off, returning to 2007 level spending is not a bad idea if done correctly.

Secondly we should be focusing on infrastructure right now but since the teabaggers have hijacked the house- the voters will get exactly what they wanted. This trigger and sequestration is a direct by product of the teabaggers putting in umcompromising zealots.

When the deep cuts start hitting all the good ol boy areas, I bet those voters will be changing their tunes. Look how fast the midwest voters are turning against the teabag officials they voted in.

rtaylor1313 - don't blame it on the Midwest! I'm pretty sure the darned Tea Partiers were from the south, and the west.

I thought the TP originated with Bauchman. And she's from where?

If this is the only way we can get these bafoons to stop spending money & increasing debt, so be it.

And now Congress gets to do what it is best at - playing the blame game. What else can one expect from these crazy spending boys and girls?

We should all take our money and spend it at home as we see fit rather than have a bunch of elitist professional politicians continue to grow a government that is truely dysfunctional.

That's what I am saying. Doesn't matter who you vote for. POWER IS CORRUPT.

Stop giving your rights away to other people to make decisions for you. If you think a company is participating in wrong doings, stop spending money their. Don't give the govt your money and get mad when they don't do anything about it or only administer a slap on the wrist followed by subsidizing their income.

It was governing when those cuts were laid out on the table so we could raise the debt ceiling and pay our PAST debt. Screw you all in congress. You don't work for me, you work for the top 2 percent. I want justice.

Taxes don't need to be raised; they just need to be restored to what they were when we had a balanced budget.

Like the Republicans have a numberĀ one goal of making sure President Obama is not reelected; Democrats need to have a number one goal of making sure the Bush tax-cuts expire.

Thank you Democrats for rejecting the Republican offer of more tax cuts for the wealthy. I hope the majority of voters remember your commitment at the next election and vote out Republicans, especially those treasonous members that placed their pledge to Grover Norquist above their pledge to the US Constitution.

I have the perfect answer to the woes of the "Super Committee."

All the Dems/Libs can move to Greece/Italy/Portugal/Spain..... ( since liberals believe in HIGH taxes and increased spending.)

They can still get there in time for the riots in the streets that take place every day.

Here is something that should be blatantly obvious to anyone wanting to save this country under the current governing system. Reduce spending to less than tax revenue to begin paying off debt. After debt is paid off, you can proceed to raise spending to the same level as tax revenue.

What is not governing is saying you will make the cuts if the deal is not struck and then avoiding making the cuts when the deal is not made.

Just make the cuts as specified in your congressional glory moment of obfuscation.

To have Government you must first have leaders. All we have is the HNIC and his sniveling band of redistributors.

The "Super Committee" has failed and Hensarling pointed the finger at the president.

"Unfortunately, the committee's challenge was made more difficult by President Obama," he wrote. "Since the committee was formed, he has demanded more stimulus spending and issued a veto threat against any proposed committee solution to the spending problem that was not coupled with a massive tax increase."

No Sh!t senator. But neither is spending $1.50 for every $1.00 you take in.

It amazes me these morons that try to compare the Tea Party
to these retards on the left known as the occupiers. Did the Tea Party members
attach the police and crap on their cars, rape women and murder anyone. Again
show me a liberal and I will show you a retard!

Manchin is coming up for re-election in 2012. Considering how conserative he is, he should just change parties.
